i joined the 200 mph club today in my bone stock 2006 ford GT. its the first time i have ever gone 200 mph on land. i tried several times to run the # in my viper but just missed the mark at 198 mph on GPS. i hit 178 mph on GPS once riding my nitrous injected honda CBR-929 motorcycle. anyway, if anyone on this site is a member of the 200 mph club post up a pic of your GPS or speedo. if you have a video to share that would be even better. :thumbsup

Dang thats moving! Put a camera in the car next time! You should post this on SVTP as well.

wow...amazing...I am barely part of the 165MPH club...

You did that at 2,600 ft. elevation?

Fred,

You did that at 2,600 ft. elevation?

Good work...

Obviously, we are speaking in hypotheticals here since none of us, under any circumstances, would ever exceed a reasonable and prudent speed on a public roadway. I am sure that gps you've so kindly provided was secured on the salt flats or the black rock desert.:wink I envy the heck out of you. :thumbsup

Having said that, upon what type of roadway would one attempt to become a member of this illustrious club? Deserted freeway in the early a.m with spotters, rural road with no cross traffic? I have a friend who went 190 as a warm up on a wide rural two lane with no cross roads, but the road seemed to evaporate under the car at that speed, and before he knew it, he was almost out of straight road.

I also have a friend who is a lawyer, and he tells me that if Johnny Law becomes an uninvited guest at one of these hypothetical celebrations of speed, a criminal reckless driving charge would be forthcoming. 8 points on the license and a really sticky problem when the insurance nannys do thier annual records search. In my hypothetical world, Johnny Law stays home and tucks away another donut while I explore the limits of physics all by my lonesome with my gps in the seat next to me.

Your hypothetical advice would be appreciated:wink

Fred,

the pic of my gps was taken at my house which resides at 2671 feet above sea level. the road where i went 200 mph this morning resides at 1,303 feet above sea level. the density altitude this morning was close to 2,600 feet above sea level though. the air temp was 65 degrees and their was no wind whatsoever as i hit 200 mph on my 1st and only attempt at 6:45 am. the road is perfectly flat and level with no change in elevation. in the past i have top speed tested my viper and my vette on this very same road under similar atmospheric conditions.

on a road at sea level on a 55 degree day i think i could go 205 mph. my speedo was inaccurately reading 204 mph. at 6,500 rpm's in 4th gear when i made the shift into 5th gear i was goin 175 mph. my car had a mere 875 miles on the odometer. its now fully broken in, lol

here is a pic that my buddy took at speed in my Z06 a few years ago on this same road. he thought we were only gonna go 172 mph so he snappped the pic a lil early, lol. we went on to hit 176 mph on the next attempt and we got that one on vid. sorry i have yet to transfer any of my vidz from VHS to CD and upload them onto my computer. but someday i will. in the meantime hopefully someone else will share their vidz.

Freddy get a driftbox from Hennessy it does much more than just a gps. It samples G force, speed, gps location at 10 times a second and saves it on a SD card. A program to graph the data is provided.

I think driftbox should add a feature to encrypt the data so that is cannot be used against someone if it fell into the wrongs hands.

That is FLYING! Not else to say!

Krymuny ... my top speed of 75 mph makes me look like an old man with a hat in a Buick ... complete with the left turn signal still on. :frown :frown :frown

I got to learn how to use all these gadgets I am still trying to learn how to use my Garmin on the Harley. :ack

2 days ago durring our Sunday drive (to visit our grand kids) I hit 180 3X, once the wife was filing her nails & when I was slowing down I said "you know we are still going 165" she said "just watch out a deere dont jump out" and went back to playing with her nails. :lol

I94 in Michigan toward Port Huron (Mi.) is fun, but by my house there is a park where the two lane hwy goes over the lakes and no driveways or side street to worry about for a mile.:eek

Of course this is all fantasy as I would never exceed the legal limit.:bs

Is the 200mph club a relative of the mile high club??????

Hmmm, that's interesting about the speedo error.

My fastest speed has been around 163 or so (indicated):biggrin

but as I was slowing down, I happend to run through the radar scan of our friendly local police department:eek .

Yep, I got a big time ticket, written for a little over twice the National speed limit...

I've been a good boy ever since.:thumbsdow

my high speed run ups will be limited to the track from now on.:frown

Mph = (rpm x tire diameter) divided by (Gear ratio x 336)

Final Drive Ratio 3.36:1 (stock rear tire diameter 28.9")

Add % for gear ratio (ie:6th would be + 37%)

Type 6-speed manual
Gear Ratios

1 - 2.61
2 - 1.71
3 - 1.23
4 - 0.94
5 - 0.77
6 - 0.63

If my goofy math is correct in 6th gear:
4000 RPM = 140.28
5000 RPM = 175.35
6000 RPM = 210.42
6500 RPM = 227.95

my speedo was inaccurately reading 204 mph. at 6,500 rpm's in 4th gear when i made the shift into 5th gear i was goin 175 mph.

Please clarify - was your speedo reading 204 when GPS had you at 200, or are you saying the speedo was reading 204 when you were going 175? If so, it is off by 29mph? That is huge. I figured they would be off some, but not that much. Anyone else experience this large a discrepancy?

He means it was saying 204 at 200. That's actually really close. A Ferrari reading 204 wouldn't be going anywhere near that and typically most speedos will be 6-9% off at 200 mph.

yes, my speedo said i was goin 204 mph but my gps told the truth that i was really only going 200 mph. i was in 5th gear and had 36 psi in my tires cold. i never really took a good look at the tach at this speed because my eyes were pretty much glued to the road, lol. but it seems that it was somewhere around 6,000 rpm's.

my vipers speedo said i was doin 200 mph but my gps said 198 mph.

my Z06's speedo said i was doin 172 mph but my gps said i was doin 176 mph.

speedo's can be way off as a result of rear gears that have been changed or tires that are of a different height than the factory original tire. i have found a 5-6% speedo error to usually be the norm on stock motorcycles at top speed but not in cars. i have never driven a ferrari so i wouldn't know how accurate their speedos are.

Thanks for clarifying the speedo readings. I hoped they were not that far off. Awesome run by the way! Indeed, 204 at 200 is really good, which means that my "almost 200" at 7000 feet altitude (not stock HP) was fairly close. This brings up an interesting question that I have been analyzing for some time - yes, HP is down at altitude, but DRAG is also less, so what is the net impact on high speed runs at altitude. My testing will continue.... I know my non-stock car had a bunch left...

Fast Freedy,

According to my calculations and if your tires never grew your speedo is correct 204.66 @ 6,500 in 5th gear:banana now I know you might have been a little under, but I can assure you the tires grew a pinch which would more than make up for it and added 1 to 2 mph.

GPS error is more than you might think. If one is in the business they are super accurate. If one is using it might be well ....not so accurate.

In either case its a great tool and anyone who bangs the 200MPH deserves a special forum spot.:cheers
