Stock vs. Optional Rims

The optional wheels are BBS. Who makes the standard rims, just Ford?

Cast Wheels

06fordgt I can hardly wait to see the end result of your efforts. Are you having them painted? Anyone else hear of concerns expressed by Florida Chris regarding powder coating cast wheels? John

Yes, the heat required to cure the powder coating could adversely effect the tensile strength of the alloy castings.

The “Standard” cast wheels are also manufactured by BBS.

Powder Coated Wheels

]Yes, the heat required to cure the powder coating could adversely effect the tensile strength of the alloy castings]

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Can't agree. It can't . Powder coating is only heated (effectively " baked" ) at 350 degrees----- Far far far less than the heat required to adversly effect tensile strength of 6061 , 5050 or any of the common aluminum alloys. If powder coating effected aluminum tensile strength there would be a lot of dead folks at Daytona this time of year.

Ferrari Beater my stock wheels arre stamped BBS. So I would assume BBS makes the stock wheels as well.

Correct ... BBS makes both the standard cast and optional forged alloy wheels for the FGT. usmcfred

Doc,

I should have said temper, not tensile strength.

Aluminum alloys are tempered to provide specific mechanical properties.

These aluminum alloys have a temper designation like “T-6” after the alloy (i.e. 6061 T-6).

This temper can be affected, softened, under certain heat conditions.

Some powder coating ovens run above 400°F and have been known to reduce the temper on such aluminum alloys.

Considering that a supplier cannot predict the cure temperature used by a powder coater, they advise against powder coating their products.

I would accept their recommendations on face value and not try to powder coat these types of parts.

Actually, BBS JAPAN ....................

FWIW:

1) The standard ones have to be easier to clean!!
2) maybe its been mentioned but I hear BBS is in some kind of recievership?

BBS bankrupt!

Thanks for the all of the insight into the rims. I have to side with the owners who feel that the chance of a GT going out on a track is slim. I like the stock rims personally. If I need light weight rims, I am sure there are other vendors who make them for the GT.

I love the optional BBS forged wheels.

The design is very purposeful in structure and strength.

Does form follow function or function follow form in this case...?

In any event, I think they did a great job with both wheel designs, and I think most owners are pleased with either, which is not often the case in this day and age.

+1 :thumbsup

All the Canadian cars came with the option light wheels with no chance to choose the stock wheels.

BBS in bankrutcy/ creditor protection!!!???? Holy cow!!

Cast stock wheels came on 7% of '06 cars and like 11% of '05 cars.

I think they look more vintage/classic and closer to the concept wheels.

For me, it was a make or break decision. I passed on 7 Red cars with forged wheels.

I will go with history (Rudge knock offs, Borani Wire, Capagnolo alloy) where rare wheels added to value and rarity.

Full respect to my 93% of brethen who are forged !

I certainly plan on tracking my GT.
The forged BBS wheels were a must for me.
Not only the weight savings are huge but there is a big difference in the wheel strenght between a cast wheel and a forged wheel.

BBS Wheels

Actually, BBS JAPAN ....................

Cast Wheels - BBS Germany

Forged Wheels - BBS Japan

I wanted a set of each so I asked if anyone had an extra set - even advertised.

The funny part for me is that I took someone's (good) advice and contacted Maurice for a set of wheels. The 6 spokes I bought just came in last week.

I even contacted someone as late as this morning about an extra set of rears they have.

Long story, but I think today that I acquired a set that I won't need plus I'll have an extra front 6 spoke without tire plus my brand new still in boxes never opened 6 spokes. I had not counted on this.

So, I'll see exactly what I have by Monday and, at that point, I'm sure I will help someone take car of a wheel fetish. Let me know if any of you are interested in an extra set or a spare and I'll email what I have when I get it. I really didn't intend to get in the wheel/tire business but I'll make the best of it. :biggrin

FWIW - Got a bunch of wheels with tires in the garage. Got out the bathroom scale. I weighed 4 rear "lightweight" optional wheels -- 59.1 - 59.6 lbs each with the F1 Eagle (slightly used) mounted. The standard 6 spokes (I have 2) both weigh 61.8 lbs each with tire and balance weights. That's only about 2.5 lbs. - maybe a bit less. The front "lightweight" wheel only weighs 20.2 lbs. without tire, 48.4 lbs with tire. The 6 spokes both weigh 48.2 lbs with tires (like new) -- less than the optional wheels!
