SoCal Custom Tuning and Dyno Day with Torrie - December 17

Ha no I wanted everything mechanically sound. Stock clutch be damned at that power level

I presume the stock clutch has a torque limit, not HP. In your experience what is the maximum amount of torque that a stock clutch, in good condition, can take, assuming full engagement and before applying the power, as done during a dyno session.

Kendal I guess you are going to be very busy putting in Stillen or Spec clutches into those new TT. :)

Torrie didn't want any of the cars to top his. :lol

:lol:lol

It really was a great day as you say Kendall, despite the cold wet weather and finicky TT GTs. What's up guys? :bored
.
Torrie, thanks again for taking a hall pass and for coming out to SoCal. While I am a layman on this whole tuning thing...I was able to watch a professional at work. :thumbsup

While my GT was the pea shooter of the bunch, it was nice nonetheless to see the stock Ford motor push the numbers it did. Torrie, I had to light foot it home in the rain, but let me tell you, I can tell how much smoother the engine is after having you dial in the air/fuel mixture and add your assorted "secret sauce" settings to the tune. Can't wait to let her out on the open road and track! :banana

Kendall, thanks again for having the itch to get this thing put together. And also a big hug to Lauren for her constant support runs (IN-N-Out Burgers!) and to Ryan, who continuously laid on his back to remove and replace the rear diffuser panels on each car...in a pool of rain water each time! Talk about commitment!!!

In all, another great time with an eclectic group of car enthusiasts who have all gravitated to the finest American automobile ever conceived and assembled, the FORD GT!:biggrin

What a day! I learned a few things and also re- realized a few also::thumbsup
Racing gas is good for racing, plugs don't like race gas when you drive around town slow and easy in traffic, and mine were toast after doing this with the race gas left over after the mile events. :eek
Stock clutches are really very good, they will even and will work for TT if you are careful. I think I really think I did my clutch in before the TT. (Hindsight for a TT, if there is any doubt your clutch has been compromised, replace it. Thought I could slip by on that one. pun intended...):lol
Torrie is a machine when it comes to tuning these cars. Watching the graphs smooth out after each pull was really amazing, of course so were the final results.
Kevin has a really stout stock car, and it really likes cold air... and as he put it"In all, another great time with an eclectic group of car enthusiasts who have all gravitated to the finest American automobile ever conceived and assembled, the FORD GT!" Monica and I feel blessed knowing all the great people we get to hang around with at these events. A special thank you to Rick for dinner.:thumbsup
Most of all, what great people Kendall and his family are, Ryan is a superstar! (Guys, we should have taken up a collection for him after he was crawling around in the freezing rain all day to work on the cars.) :cheers
Merry Christmas

Just boarded in Vegas for FL

I guess you got tired of the lousy SoCal weather, so back to sunny FL. :lol

Despite the rain & cold weather, it was a fun day! It was great meeting the Forum members in person; my GT did well on the dyno thanks to Torrie's expertise; Thank you to the Pond Clan for setting this event up and for Ryan & Lauren help and for being there with us! Torrie, thank you for coming all the way to So Cal to play with our GTs! ;-)
Merry Xmas to all and wishing you a Happy New Year 2011!

Home finally! Come on everyone we need pictures and videos from the event I was working the whole time and couldn't do that myself :lol:lol:lol

Damnit Jim, I'm a mechanic, not a miracle worker.

Gentlemen,

Torrie & Kendall put together a great event. Even in the rain a bunch of GT owners, some meeting for the first time, make for a great day. Kendall is a neat guy but his son Ryan is ten times cooler! I told Torrie that anything in the 1350-1400 HP range would be fine with me and that should be no problem for a REAL professional. Jokes aside, watching Torrie tune a car is like watching Eric Clapton play the guitar. It's something to see. CoolTech, having done several Heffner TT installs now, really know their way around these cars. They worked with great speed and efficiency swapping boost controllers and checking everything possible in the limited time available. My car put down 860 HP on 16 lbs of boost. Two different electronic boost controllers and the old manual boost controller were tried but 16 lbs was it. How many cars can come up 200 HP short of the mark and still lay down over 850HP?? :lol Vacuum line or ??? was causing my waste gates to open early so that will be chased down later in the week.

Terry, trying to avoid the ban for life, left the field with a slipping clutch. :lol This was not the TT cars day but the SC cars kicked ass with some great numbers. Off to the restaurant for great food, always interesting conversation, and Makers Mark Manhattens! We did a special toast to DBK's new daughter who is still on the dyno behind the pit wall. We can't wait to see her make her first run!

My GT will never be finished as there is always new cool stuff to try out. The Ford GT and the people who drive them, work on them, build products for them, and modify them bring me tremendous joy. Thanks again Kendall for putting on a great event. And thanks Torrie for traveling 3000 miles to participate.

Now, find my vacuum leak, put my car back on the dyno, and anything less than 1050 HP will brand you both as complete business and personal failures!! :biggrin

:cheers

Wow what a great gathering. Thanks Kendall, Torrie, Ryan, Lauren and the Dyno boys. Last but certainly not least, thanks Rick for dinner. It was so nice to see you all. I regret not taking my car as I really think my simple Cooltech Pulley, Tune will give all you boys a run :) Seriousley, I only got ot watch Terry's car on the dyno but that was enough to confirm how much I love our cars. Thanks Chip for the great pics. Love the first one of your E-Boost. It was such a pleasure to meet you all and see you guys again. Merry Christmas

Great pics guys. I recognize that dyno. :wink

Sorry things did not go exactly as expected for the TT's, but as usual you all rallied and had a great time. I am sure all will be well before the next mile so I can come in third again. :lol :cheers

i am sorry that i missed you guys as i recently bought a gen two 3.3L Whipple supercharger that i am gonna have Kendall install and dyno for me next month. i have been busier than hell lately and just sold my old house and could not make this event even though i wanted too. to all you turbo guys > "in order to win the race you must finish the race first" :thumbsup

with that said i pray to god my crankshaft does not fail after Kendall puts my Whipple on next month :willy

if and when it ever does fail then i am gonna rebuild my motor like "Soroush" from this site did with nitrous and headers, etc.

i hope to see all of you at the Mojave 1.3 mile in April, lol :cheers

Great photos, I was just over the hill, in West LA at the time. Work commitment kept me there. Also the rain which still has not stopped (4 days continuous so far, and 4 more before it lets up), was a big deterent. Looks like another most excellent time.

What is the cong title? "It Never Rains in Southern California, but When It Does, It Pours" Quite true this weekend. Where did you guys have dinner?

I presume the stock clutch has a torque limit, not HP. In your experience what is the maximum amount of torque that a stock clutch, in good condition, can take, assuming full engagement and before applying the power, as done during a dyno session.

Clinton, I think that we are asking a LOT of the clutches at about 900 lb-ft TQ, approx double stock output levels. Terry got away with several 1-mile passes at different venues with 900+ TQ and he seems to be convinced that his clutch was damaged in a "3rd gear instead of 1st" incident by a friend well before the turbos were installed. Tom's car with a LOT of 1-mile passes seems to be doing fine so far with the same TT power... but he is probably on the edge. The same is true of Aloha's TT although with much fewer 1-mile passes. So, based on this limited data, I'd say that 900 RWTQ is possible on the OEM clutch - and probably not a whole lot more. At these levels we're asking a lot and so I would agree that we are going to have some clutch replacements in the not-so-distant future and the first of which will likely be Terry's.

Kendall you just confirmed my desire to get a better ignition system. Although stock works great even in heavily modified cars, it has to be in top shape to function well. I had the same thing happen to me during a dyno session.

Clinton, I hear your concerns regarding the stock ignition system - but here's my observation.

For the Heffner TT's, we are seeing max boost pressures of about 22 +/- 1psi before we run these cars out of fuel. So, while the turbos can do more boost, unless we start modifying the fuel system, we're gonna hurt something! On the ignition side of the equation, the cars seem to be fine with a .024 plug gap. Yes, that is small but it really hasn't given us any problems at all**, and we have probably around 50 1-mile runs between Tom, Terry's, and Kelvin's car with this sparkplug config. **OK, we DID have our first problem on the dyno with the plugs but the concensus is that C16 leaded race fuel and putting around town on it, is a recipe to really hurt the plugs. Perhaps with better ignition system, we would get a better burn under this condition, but who knows. Anyway, it seems that a good solution is to better manage the use of C16.... keep it for the track events and then try to go back to something less corrosive for everyday driving.

Was this the 1st test of the digital boost controller since they were installed? I will be listening for the updates on what cause the lack of boost control

No, this was not the first test of the digital boost controller. We had previously set up the boost controller on AlohaGT's car - where it performed flawlessly out of the box, then we did Tom's car which we also dyno tested (the 1019HP pull was when we were dialing in the controller) and finally, we have done Terry's car. All have worked perfectly. Based on our findings, I would say that the boost controller performance is no longer a suspect in Chip's car either. Remember, we switched to Aloha's solenoids and then finally to complete manual control with no difference in results.

I am a very strong advocate of this controller based on our experience. Each one has work perfectly and consistently. Programming is very straightforward and easy. I will keep you posted on what we find out on Chip's car. Since running 220+ at a mile event (where he obviously had 20+ lbs of boost), the car has been in at least one other shop and has had additional (albeit small and easy) mileage, so we just need to make sure everything is as it should be.

I missed the first part of the day due to work. Called Kendall to see how things were going to see if I could get the Whippled car in for some tuning. Since things were kind of running late Kendall said to bring a regular car. And even though Chip said that no one could bring anything with more hp than his car, I chanced it and brought my '61 Falcon.

While there I had a chance to catch up with old friends, and see some of the dyno runs. At the time I really felt bad for Ryan who was soaked pretty well through. (But the good lord has ways of giving you the chance to experience the feeling. :wink On the way back from my cabin this morning a rock came off the mountain and took out my front wheel, and tire on my Excursion. So I had a pleasant time changing it in the rain and wind. I was really soaked through by the time I was done. :lol )

Dinner was great, and again afforded me the opportunity to talk to some of the great folks we have here on the forum, their better halves, and family members.
