Screen legend dead at 83 after long battle with cancer.

Great man's man. He accomplished so much, gave back, what a sad day! I have a giant lump in my throat. RIP kind sir.

Another of the men that I've admired and looked up to has passed away - this has not been a good year!

What a sad day! A great Person, Actor, Race Car Driver, Husband, and Father who gave so much to others in many ways. May He Rest In Peace, As He Fought A Great Battle With A Deadly Disease. Tomy

I didn't agree with his politics, he was a dyed in the wool lefty after all, but he wasn't one of the current crop of venomous anti American whack jobs out there. He had intergrity, and he did what he believed in, as the assortment of Newman's Own products shows. A celeb who actually gave back. Amazing.

Sorry to see this. :frown Clearly a man who reached a lot of people on many levels. Unfortunately there does not seem to be another generation of American Icons ready to take the mantle from the ones we lose.

WESTPORT, Conn., Sept 27, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Remembering the life and legacy of Paul Newman, Newman's Own Foundation has issued a statement. The statement, from Vice-Chairman Robert Forrester, follows:

"Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.

"Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one's life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance.

"An exceptional example is the legacy of Newman's Own. What started as something of a joke in the basement of his home, turned into a highly-respected, multi-million dollar a year food company. And true to form, he shared this good fortune by donating all the profits and royalties he earned to thousands of charities around the world, a total which now exceeds $250 million.

"While his philanthropic interests and donations were wide-ranging, he was especially committed to the thousands of children with life-threatening conditions served by the Hole in the Wall Camps, which he helped start over 20 years ago. He saw the Camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back, and raise a little hell. Today, there are 11 Camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Through the Camps, well over 135,000 children have had the chance to experience what childhood was meant to be.

"In Paul's words: "I wanted to acknowledge luck; the chance and benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others, who might not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it."

"Paul took advantage of what life offered him, and while personally reluctant to acknowledge that he was doing anything special, he forever changed the lives of many with his generosity, humor, and humanness. His legacy lives on in the charities he supported and the Hole in the Wall Camps, for which he cared so much.

"We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person."

.... what we have here.... is a failure to communicate...... When a man's mamma dies....... he gets rabbit in his blood...

Too many favorites that he starred in.... Cool hand Luke is in my top 5 easily...

One of the true "Legends of Hollywood" that was actually a true human being. I wish I could call him a friend ... I can not .... but I can call him in many areas a role model.

My wishes and prayers are with his family and those who loved him ....

Tonight, I watch Butch and Sundance .......

Keep "shakin'n the bush", Paul. You gave so much to so many. One of the best role models in history. We will miss you.

R I P Paul. You left such a wonderful footprint in so many diverse circles...they just aren't going to know where to slot you once you get through the Pearly Gates...

My fondest memory of PL Newman was from Road Atlanta about 10 years ago.
Somehow I got shoved into Group 7 in a 911 Porsche. A moving chicane is what I was for about 5 laps - and then all hell broke loose. All the real muscle came barreling by. Going into turn 10, HARD on the brakes - I was passed by a Lola T70. Holy *^#@...WTF was that. He was still on the gas...and braked at about the 2 mark. Unbelievable. Well after making inquiries in the pits later I discovered it was "PL Newman"...in a friend's T70. I'll never forget it. He was 73!

Thank you Paul for being the Gentleman your were. We will miss you.

I'm the best you ever seen, Fats. I'm the best there is. And even if you beat me, I'm still the best.

a post from svtp:
Paul Newman founded the "Hole in the Wall" camps for sick children. Here is a link to their main site:

Kyle Petty founded the Victory Junction camp, a Hole in the Wall camp after his son Adam was killed:

If you are ever able to donate time or money these charities have to be two of the best in the world.

Newman gave over $250 Million dollars to these charities and a 1000+ others in his lifetime, all while living with the same wife for over 50+ years..........something unheard of of a single other Hollywood actor.

Godspeed Paul............there will NEVER be another man like you!

A great shame - one of life's true champions and a screen legend, of which there are so few.

RIP
