Future Ford GT Super Car

Sorry Phil,
But in my business I push my suppliers for the best deal they sell anyone. As a stockholder of many companies I expect no less from them.
Totally with you, but there's only so many times you can talk parts suppliers into selling you stuff at a loss to them.

There's got to be some payback, and with the Ford GT they got it (probably) by just saying they have their parts in it. The question is, how often can you afford to do this? I think the GT is a special case. It's a shape the whole world knows and generally loves. It's worth having your name on it as it'll be around and still good looking in another 40 years.

That, I'm almost certain, will not be the case with the GR-1. It's got a bit of a Jag front, 599 esk side profile and the rear is a little Shelby Daytona Le Mans Coupe I guess? Maybe, as with some cars it looks better in the flesh, but it's not a classic in my eyes.

Do I hope they build it? Hell yes, as the more cars around the better, but I doubt it'll have the massive approval the GT got.

Okay, All of us have the best of the best race car with an incredible heritage of being the number one car of the 1960s and also of the current decade. But as time passes we all are, to a certain degree, looking for the next addition to the Ford GT Heritage. How many of us would jump at the chance of buying a Shelby GR-1 super car? I believe that Ford will re-organize and survive this latest economic downturn, but what Ford needs to realize is that no one remembers the specific year that the Escort won an award, but they do recognize and associate with ultimate performance cars that create legends. And Ford's Heritage is not on Escorts, Broncos, Explorers, Expeditions, Minivans, but on iconic automobiles that change the world of auto racing.

Hence the query?

Who would buy a Shelby GR-1, built by Ford, if it was available today?

Set me aside two, one for Monday - Thursday and the other Friday to Sunday! An I will fit in the Ford GT somewhere in that schedule!

Is anyone in this group in the "Loop" sufficiently to get accurate info as to if/when/how much this GR-1 could be a commercial possibility? Would be very interested in a GROUP BUY, as someone here said.

Group buy... for some mareques being an owner of a current model gives you an inside track at buying the next model. This is a benefit that the Viper and Ferrari owners have enjoyed.

Many Ford executives visit this site. We have had the benefit of more inside information than any owners group that I can think of. Jamal gave us a tech session in Newport.

Bottom line, if the car will be produced for $225k or less, will you pony up today a deposit. 10% would be $22,500. $5k is peanuts.

This thread could be interesting.

GR-1 deposit?

Put my name into the pot for a GR-1. If you need letters or checks to be written, contact me and it'll get done.
Miracle's sometimes happen. I suspect this one will only occur with a lot of letters and deposit checks to Ford, given the bashing the entire U.S. auto industry is taking!

I really think that the car needs to be priced under $80,000 in the ball park of the Z06 or Viper to make sense for Ford. I don't know if a good version could be made at that price, but this car needs to be somewhat attainable by upper middle class folks.

To be honest, my preference would be for the car to continue to be priced in the GT league. When the car was going to be built, it was going to be directly benchmarked to beat everything the Ferrari 575 could do, much in the way the GT was benchmarked specifically against a Ferrari 360. That includes pricing. There is no way the car could be produced anywhere under 100k, or probably 150k, just because it's continuing to use the GT architecture.

The GT is not really a competitor to the Z06 and Viper. Those cars are tremendous performance values, but the Corvette is not exotic and the Viper is aimed at an audience looking for something very raw (a dwindling market, which is why the car will be gone in under 4 years). I agree it would be nice if Ford had an "affordable" sports car, but that would be a ground up project. The viability of the GR-1 lies solely in its derivation from the GT program.

I also think Ford's strength lies in capitalizing on showing itself as the legitimate American alternative to Ferrari. People don't cross-shop F430s vs. Z06s. They buy both. People do choose F430 or FGT.

I was reading up on the car tonight and a couple things are not clear.
Inspiration for the Ford Shelby GR-1 came from George Saridakis from production and concept designs. In Ford's Irvine Advanced Design Studio
So if its a ford employee's design how did shelby get his name on it? :confused

2nd "Based on the architecture of the Ford GT, the Ford Shelby GR-1 is a front-engined, two-seat, fastback supercar, combining modern sculptured surfaces in a sleek muscular fastback design"
how can it be based on a GT if it is front engine? :confused

The name is just a name Todd. George did the sketch in one take and the car was modeled and built. Pure marketing.

Architecture can be shuffled around.

Does this mean there would be the luxury of a reasonable trunk? Does anyone, (DBK) have a clue if this is even still on the list of possible production vehicles? BTW, GR stands for ???

I don't know on the trunk question, but given the shape and the location of the engine, and the point of benchmarking the 575 when that was still around, I would say yes.

It is still a possible production vehicle. We mentioned it to Mark Fields and Robert Parker as recently as this week. I probably shouldn't open my mouth too much but they already had performance metrics, costing, etc under way for the production of the vehicle before the proverbial "s" hit the fan and everything got scuttled. Just need someone to say "hey, remember that thing (that we still have in commercials and tow around the country)? Let's finish what we started.

GR stands for Group Racing in an homage to the Shelby road race vehicles of the 60s.

Is anyone in this group in the "Loop" sufficiently to get accurate info as to if/when/how much this GR-1 could be a commercial possibility? Would be very interested in a GROUP BUY, as someone here said.

See above. I think the volume for this car would be appropriate at 1500 units per year for 3 years. It would take probably 2-3 years to make it hit the road. The GT went ground up in the same time frame, and this car would be using substantial re-learn from that program.

As for price, my guess would be marginally north of what the GT cost.

There are angles where the car is just phenomenal. The rear 3/4, direct rear, and interior all make me cry like a schoolgirl.

And yes, if the car was priced at $150k, that'd be like, what, £8? :frown :lol

Bring It On

I said it before - I'm in. Tell me where to write the check and send the letter to sign. And please disregard Spirit's coments that it must have a V8. The V10 they talked about is fine with me if it gets us the cars faster.

O.K.

I WANT ONE [or maybe 2] but, with a few caveats:
  • Must be V-8 Powered
  • Must be Supercharged
  • Present GT Owners have 1st rights of purchase on the initial production run
  • Base pricing to be less than $150,000.00 USD
BRING IT ON !!

I think the plan was for it to use GT powerplant, but let me ask why you'd prefer it that way. Just out of curiosity. If you ditched the supercharger, you'd lose the ability to make crazy power as easy and a bit of driveability, but you'd save a ton of weight. I think the blower and all the accoutrements (blower, intercooler, plumbing, etc) weigh something like 175 pounds.

For my money, with the 6.2L boss on the horizon, I'd go that route. The motor can be made 7.0L, and would be able to make well over 500hp N/A.

As I mentioned in the other thread. This is the only car that would make me consider selling my GT to buy this car.

The Shelby name is on this because it is also a derivative of the shelby cobra concept. At least that's what the rides episode said.
