shortening the shifter

I find the shifter ball elevation in the gt somewhat higher than I would like. Can the shifter shaft simply be unscrewed and machined shorter (as in my Viper) or is the R and R exercise more complex than that? :confusedSurely . this must be a common process !

Purchase the Short Shifter from FRPP - P/N M-7210-GT. It also uses brass (or bronze) bushings instead of rubber for a tighter gate feeling.

Such modification would yield an unacceptable level of shifting effort since the lenght of the shaft below the pivot point would be disporportionate to (shortened) length above the pivot point. As Ralphiw said, get a short throw shifter. Such a wonderful mod that I bought a spare.

Thanks for the prompt reply...........I will take the advice re the Short Shifter !

Way back a legend in the community offered a lowered shifter ball (analogdesigner). Reports of this with the short shifter, weren't too much effort. I only have the short shifter, and I recommend highly.

One of the best mods you can do, I can get one for you if needed.

I have both a short shifter and a lowered shifter ball. MOMO shift knobs come in a great vatiety of styles and they all screw down further than the stock shifter ball. For a modest investment you can try the MOMO knob alone and then decide if you want a shorter shift action than the screwed down MOMO knob provides.

I am seeing the short shifter on flea-bay for $430-$480....what is an appropriate price to pay ? I'd prefer to buy from a forum member as this would deliver a presumption of credibility. I haven't really heard wether or not the oem shaft is easily removed by simply unthreading....if so, I would do so and replace it with a temp shaft wittled out of round stock which I could then modify to my liking as far as length goes. I could then determine wether or not the shift effort has been altered prior to parting with any cash !

The short shifter is more than just a shorter shaft. The mechanism is changed to allow for a shorter "throw" to result in more movement in the shifter cables. You will NOT achieve this by merely shortening the shifter shaft.

Man, there are a lot of jokes that have been tee'd up in this thread but I'll simply add my +1 that the Ford Racing short throw shifter is a great mod that makes driving my GT even better. You'll love it.

Yes, I realize that is the case.....At this point I'm primarily interested in wether or not I am after a shorter shaft (insert joke here:bored). The advantages of the altered geometry resulting in a shorter throw are obvious and most desirable. My apologies for not being clear on my intent.:slap

Thanks Chip.....how much effort is it to install the FR short throw shifter?

I had the GT Guys do it this summer, it involves taking apart the entire console, removing the sub woofer, they know what they're doing, the two of them working together it probably took them 1/2 hour, to someone who attempts it and doesn't know the car as they do...............probably a few hours and pray they don't do any damage.

So it doesn't sound like that big of a challenge.....aside from the fact that I enjoy working on my cars myself as much as possible, I would probably farm this out , given your comments, IF I had confidence in any local shops. I do have a fully equipped shop and most any tool commonly used so where would I find an assembly/dissassembly manual or instructions to carry this out? Thanks in advance!

Not hard to do at all, but be careful when removing the center console not to scratch anything.

IMO the biggest PITA is getting the 6 of the Torx screws installed on the sub cover.

Keep in mind that the Canadian GT's had standard radio. No sub-woofer to mess with.

Not a terribly "tough" job. Be careful with the center console. As the FRRP short throw assembly replaces the standard unit, no cable adjustments needed. Go with the metal shift bushings over the nylon ones.I would expect it would be less than an hour total time.

One of the best changes one can do to make the GT even easier to drive.

I had no problems, or damage installing my short shifter myself. Very straight foreword, I thought.

No effort at all. Only two tools required. 1. Checkbook and 2. Pen. Call the GT Guys and 30 minutes later......Voila!!!! It's done!!! Drive & enjoy.
