If you want serious pain, here's more on the paint struggle. This is another TLDR, but it's a giant commitment to paint a car sight unseen. Not a car I wanted to repaint.

Really, I learned a lot about paint and color selection from forum members Matt & Danielle. They have some cars in some really ballsy colors and they seem to have it down to a science, so I paid attention to how they picked colors and basically replicated their process. I had a paint shop spray me colors before the order process even started, and then carried the Ford samples and my own all over the place to get a look at how they behave in different environments. I should have just listened to Danielle and I could have picked this color right off the bat.

Solid blues are the hardest cars to assess. You can see 20 of them that all look the same and totally different. A lot of people think this looks like grabber. I actually found a local kid with a grabber car and invited him over to help me with "a project." He thought the place was fake.

How grabber does this look in the light?

Not very. This was the original idea put together in Forza 6.

:lol

Thanks.

I knew it would be risky. Me and Frisella were the first two people to have cars painted out of range, so I didn't want to F it up. Really put a lot of time and energy into annoying everyone to death on the selection of the final color. :lol Poor Garen and Svennson. Design guys like silvers, greys, metallics that "flop" a lot so they can show off the shape. Solids don't have that effect usually. Grabber doesn't nearly as much as this color.

The ultimate pic that really shows what I wanted was this:

4636652273_6687acd470_b.jpg

I figured with as wild as the GT shape is, it would "glow" just like a hippy 993 from top to bottom, which it does. Was pretty happy when a 993 GT2 in the same color sold for $2.4 million. So it wasn't just me that thinks it looks awesome.

The painted panels looked really f-ing awesome at the factory and in the polish room when I was up there, but you just never know until you see it as a whole.

Now, I will offer this same color selection service to anyone on the forum for the low, low price of $50,000 a week. That's about the pain level. :lol

cool story Dave. I could tell each time I was at the 'Garage' over the winter that the number of small 'flat' color samples, painted 'domes', 'plan-view painted' GT shapes etc ... all in what I concluded were shades of Grabber Blue , were multiplying in number.
I knew if I left my Carbon Fiber Toy box 'color shapes ' there too long, they would most likely come back to me all painted in shades of blue....
But , a fine choice.
congrats.

Very cool Story. Most people don't know how complicated color really is. Everything you see on most kind of usual displays like Phones, Pads, Laptops, TVs, PC Monitors is uncalibrated and simply cannot be trusted. Virtually rendered in 3D tools like Keyshot or VRED (at Ford) comes closer but requires an artist that knows how to work with a calibrated color workflow (few do, most don't like it because it limits creativity and mostly images are tweaked to show a more desirable car that convinces people to like and buy it). Still a calibrated display required. But this only works for unicolor paints. For metallic or flipflop paints there is no perfect digital representation. I once had the opportunity to listen to talk of a researcher describing how a potential digital representation would look like, way too expensive to compute and gobs of data. Everything happens at the micro level ( shapes of the pigments, and how many of them and how thick that layer of metallic is, it's color and the color of the clear coat and the level of orange peel)

And in the end there is the mixing process of the color and the skills of the painting artist.

So much that could go wrong.

Congrats that the result you got is so close to what you were hoping for. I really like it.

Yep, perfect combination of dark accents and light blue. It's a happy color! Well done Dave.

Dave, you mentioned your color is "high chroma". What is it and what effect does it have ?

I talked the Raj yesterday and he did say he is getting "j 0001'. Well he actually said first VIN for 2018.

Anyone know if Rai is going to be able to go to LeMans with Ford Executives this year? I sure hope he is able to go!

Wow! You sure did your do diligence. What a process you went through. Definitely not Grabber Blue. Thank you for sharing what a sincere task you took to make this decision the right choice. This is the kind of effort that this car deserves when paired with a caregiver for life.
