Does anyone know why the cutouts in the front are blocked off and do not supply air to front brake rotors? Would ducts be hard to route to the center of the rotors?

Brake ducts

This has been briefly discussed in older threads. Check archives. No reason that anyone could come up with. Wait till August and ask the engineers direct.

Evidently they ran out of time and money to get the brake ducts functional. Someone with a black/silver GT at the Rally did a very nice job of making the stock ducts functional. I would really appreciate it if he posted some pictures and technical tips?

It is fairly complex once the cutouts are opened. Cooling hardware is in the way on the passenger side and needs to be repositioned before ducts can be installed.

Also after ducts are installed the tires will hit the duct when a sharp turn is made.

I took the caps off the brake scoop inlet.

Haven't had time to duct to the discs. But hopefully will be able to do so pretty soon. Want to do some temp checking to get the before/after. I'll probably ask Neil in NZ what he's done to the race car regarding brake ducting.

Neil are you out there?

Hi jeff
Great reading about your trip home, and thanks for everything at the rally.
As for the brake duct setup mine will be a lot easier as I wont have any piping in the way on the passenger sideas mine will run through the inside of the passenger seat area through the front bulkhead.
I was thinking about the STD setup and where the tyre will rub on the brake cooling hose inside the fender, I would just fab up an oval tube narrow enough to clear the tyre on full lock, just make sure it has the same suface area as your brake ducting and mount it to the inner chassis rail then run ducting to the brakes from it.
:cheers :thumbsup Neil

Brake Ducting

Hi right back to you Neil. Dearborn will never be the same.

Thanks for the input. I had been thinking about nitrile with an aluminum shield at the rub areas. Foot space is so rare on the passenger side, I'll keep my stuff on the outside.

How's the project coming along? Is there a web link to your race series? Don't remember if I told you that a racing friend here is bringing his ex-Jackie Stewert Tyrell F-1 for the Tasman Vintage race. Also his ex-Tasman series Lotus F2 racer. The later will go only if he finds a new block and crank. It got heavily ventilated this last week end. A very expensive ouch.

Did you see the article about the Stillen GT racer testng in California this last week end? Looks well done as all his projects are.

Take care my friend.

Yes I did see steve's article,we talked to him this week and his GT will be in new zealand in a month for the NZ targa so I will catch up with him then.
The new panels etc just arrived an hour ago so tommorow its on to the chassis machine then the real work can begin, ie roll cage, 15" brakes, exhaust,120 liter fuel cell, penske 4 way adj shocks, deeper side skirts and front splitter, plus all the other "minor bits" 'he he'.
It would awsome to see those tasman cars running again,we just revived the old formula 5000 historic's hear and we have a new tasman 5000 series with australia and england in these old beasts.
I'm just of home to have dinner and a few beers so I will catch you later :cheers Neil

Canepa has a kit for the ducts, installed it is $1500

Who is Canepa and what is this kit of which you speak?

Canepa

They did some cosmetic mods to a GT that I believe is for sale. http://www.canepa.com
They list "...satin black functional front brake cooling ducts." I'm suspicious. Could be painted stock ducts with the backs removed. I'll call tomorrow & report back here.

I'm going to the 50th anniversary celebration at Laguna Seca this Saturday March 10 (& then an open track at the Laguna the next day!). I may stop by Canepa if they are open as it is on my way to the track. They have a museum also but it could be their sales lot also!

Ed, are you going to running your GT at Laguna? I have some work to do on my car still before tracking it, mainly finding more headroom and quieting it down. I just did a crude test for sound and it was 97db using a Radio Shack meter on fast response and A weighting at about 50ft and this was done in 2nd gear WOT on at about 55 mph.

I did another test in SF up a steep hill lined with houses on both sides at about 30 ft and it was 101 db in 1st and 98 db on 2nd. Yikes, I need to get it down to 90 to 92 db. This is without the baffles on a Heffner exhaust. I think your Ida is a little louder.

less than or equal to 92 db

Dear Black Ice - I have Super Trapp slip ons that with one disk must be 50 db. Of course the GT then has around 250 hp I would guess! It's like running a cork in the exhaust. Of course, I would play around with the system to see how many disks I could run to get to 92 db uphill with the typical overcast cool Laguna morning. I haven't used the Super Trapps yet. I will have my GT at the open track but am not pre-registered. I may just be a spectator. My friend with his modified ' 06 Z06 will be there running. He's usually the fastest fendered car on the track. Are you coming?

Ed

My Black/Silver Stripe was the one at last year's rally with the brake ducts made functional. Yes it is true there are numerous obstacles in the way to the rotors, especially the air conditioning stuff. I had a guy do the work for me and he said it was a b*tch, but it works great. Also, mine stops right at the inner fender with the option of extending more tubing right to the rotor. This is left off for regular driving b/c it will definitely rub on a full turn. Would love to post pics, but my car is at Saleen right now and then off to Genaddi.

Ed, I have other plans on Sat. but Sun is possible to be a spectator. What is the schedule of activities on Sun? I would love to get a ride in your GT on the track someday. I promise not to wet your seats.

Have you tried fitting the Supertraps on the Ida? I looks at my Heffner and the tips are tapered and that complicates the mounting of the Supertraps.

A certain black/silver with a trailer also has the brake ducts fucntional since late 2005.

Yes the tires will rub the ducts on full lock and the air conditioning bits need to be cut off and repositioned.

Laguna on Sunday, brake ducts

Black Ice - The 50th anniversary stuff is on Saturday but the open track is on Sunday. I'll be there both days but I may not be driving on Sunday. If you're going to wet your pants let's put you as a passenger in my friend Gerry's Z06! Call me on my cell.

forgot the brake ducts

I played phone tag with Bruce Canepa today regarding the GT brake ducts he advertises. I hope to speak to him tomorrow. I'll report soon.

Post pictures, please.

Next time it is being serviced and the wheels are removed.
