Depending on which way we go we might even go down to monument valley and the AZ crew, . :cheers

Monument Valley - isn't that where the Roadrunner and Coyote hang out?
Come to think of it, we have a signed "Camilo original" sketch of this area. On a paper plate!

You've GOT to go that route! Camillo, it's your destiny.

Chris,
You will not eat any dust cause you're gonna trailer to Scottsdale, unload your GT at my house where I have secure parking for your tow vehicle and trailer, and you're gonna drive the GT to the hotel, to the dinner, and from Scottsdale to the Rally with the rest of us!!!!!!! What a great plan of action, I can't believe I thought of it. :thumbsup Your GT is begging for the 600 mile round trip from Scottsdale to the Ralley and back. :banana :banana What say you??

Chip

Now there is an idea I hadn't considered! Sounds like a plan. :thumbsup :cheers

I thought Bony would join our group drive from the Bay Area to SoCal on Hwy 1!!! I was afraid he would say no since that would be going an extra 175 miles or so NW for him!

Ed

P.S. Any one from the Pacific NW or NorCal is welcome. We leave Wednesday am.

Ed,.. We good hook up on Tuesday early AM on 5 and drive to Scottsdale?
Also, spoke to Steve, thanks for designing the fire extingusher mount.

Maybe we should start the event on Monday? Lots of great driving in the Southwest?

I,m in!
Ed Simms,
I,m not sure if I'm driving or trailering yet. If I trailer, I'll be happy to help some of the locals driving down with excess luggage. Let's stay in touch.

Depends on whether folks want to drive from Scottsdale/Phoenix on I-10 straight in to LA area, or if you want to take the back roads. If back roads, the route I have taken before goes like this;
- (from Scottsdale take I-10 to Blythe CA). Here is where you leave the interstate. Take 78 southwest through the desert. You go through Glamis and the Sand Dune monument area - very cool road. Stay on 78 through Brawley, Ocotillo Wells, Ramona, Escondido, and hit I-5 at the coast just north of Carlsbad. Take 5 north and I think it is around Dana Point that you can get on 1 (or the Coastal Hwy). Then just cruise along the coast to Newport Beach.

This was the 2nd half of the route I envisioned. The first half was from Albuquerque (for folks coming on I-40 through NM) to Flagstaff. From Flag head south through Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona, across the valley to Jerome (quaint mining town built on the side of the mountain), and then to Prescott. From Prescott head southwest through the mtn pass (good twisties) down the escarpment into the desert and eventually join up with I-10 and on to Blythe CA. Then see above for Part II.

I've run both of those routes many times on bikes and IMO the 2nd option would be better. I'm even thinking of driving out from So Cal and hook up for the drive in as well if work permits. Another option might be to head north out of Scottsdale to Flagstaff I 40, I 40 to Kingman, Kingman on old Route 66 through Oatman and on to Barstow. Just a thought.

Also if you choose the Southern routes I would suggest leaving early in the morning. The chance of winds and blowing sand through the Imperial deserts is less.

I hear you Steve, I'm getting fired up reading this thread also and thinking I need to start the ralley in Scottsdale, not Santa Monica:banana

Hmmmm..... Rally to the Rally?

Lets see, Fresno to Scottsdale, 5 hours, join the convoy to the Rally.... mmmm?
Damn straight, how can I miss this. Put me down,.. I will be there. Hellloooo Tony, this time I will be the tail gunner:lol

Sounds like a plan Bony.:biggrin

Hey, I'm just happy to be included. Wherever you local guys think we should drive is good by me. :thumbsup

DBK -- I'm in! Again, thanks for all your efforts!

8 GT's and growing!!

Everetto,

I-10 straight in to LA is about 5 1/2 hours. I like the sound of your alternate route when we get past Blythe, how much time will it add? With that info we'll take a vote. Thanks for the input!!:thumbsup

Put me down for one. Registration paid via PayPal 4/11/07. The rest is in the mail. I will be driving my car to the event. Thankyou much! :banana

Current count after week 1 = 51 GT's.

Rally to the Rally

Dave,

So far we have 15% of the total launching out of Scottsdale after our Tuesday night Pre-Rally tuneup gathering. We will make a formation arrival at check-in time. For those driving to the event, join us for dinner July 31 and I'm predicting 30 GT's leaving Scottsdale at 8AM on Aug 1 for the final assault on Newport Beach.:banana :banana :banana

Hi Chip,

If you compare the 2 routes on the map, they look pretty close distance-wise; the interstate route kind of comes down into the LA area and the southern route kind of comes up into the LA area. The last 50-75 miles on either route may be where the time is lost or gained, however, I think the last part of the southern route is really cool going up/along the coast. It has been a long time since I did the southern route (on a sportbike years ago) but I will hazard a guess that the southern route will take at least a couple of hours longer - maybe more if folks stop more often (like around the sand dunes etc.). Maybe the CA guys can help with time estimates.

The northern route (Phoenix to Kingman to old Route 66) would be a blast in a GT. I've driven that route a few times in the last few months (in "Taurus Red").

Route 93 between Phoenix and Kingman is smooth and straight, with a few sweepers thrown in for good measure. With a good spotter running ahead, the big 205 would be possible in many places. Old route 66 is a spectacular road to drive on. Up one side of the Black mountains and down the other, with MANY hairpin turns and switchbacks. The entire road is only 1 3/4 lanes wide, so anything over 35 mph is not an option. There are many drop offs and very few guard rails, so it might not be the best for the squemish. But the View from Sitgreaves Pass is spectacular. The only town on this stretch is the old gold mining town of Oatman. The whole town is only about 1/8 mile long. The only draw back here is the wild burros that wander the streets, leaving many "road apples" in their wake.

If you think about taking this route, it might be wise to plan an extra day for the trip, as it would be a shame not to stop and view the many vistas and sites. With luck, I'll be living in Kingman by then, and would love to host a GT pit stop. :thumbsup

GT Tech, this route could be done in a day but it would be a hump! The other two routes would also be a great choice but the chance of blowing sand concerns the hell out of me. I have run all these routes many times and have the sandblasted windshields and grills to prove it. A good Idea might be to call weather and the CHP the day before to get weather and road conditions, then choose the route. I-40 and Route 66 almost always have less wind and airborne debris. Also unless a storm is blowing through, the early mornings always have less wind.
Someone once replyed to a post I made about getting a bra to go along with the film already on my car as "overkill". Sand kicked up from a desert hwy or blowing in the wind WILL find every frontal exposed area of a car, making a road/rock chip seem minor.
