Guess it is now going to be enforced that a plate frame can not cover the state frame. Not that I am for legislation like this, but I have seen MANY a license plate that I had NO idea what state it was from because the tacky dealer plate frame covered the state.....

That's mostly the fault of the STATE'S. 'Pretty simple to design a plate where the letters spelling out the state's name are LARGE enough to prevent that altogether - or at least leave enough of the letters exposed that one could still tell what was what. OR they could just locate the name a bit better.

The really totally SENSELESS, useless thing that's going to be required now in a couple states is that idiotic "carbon footprint" sticker that'll have to be displayed!!!! PURE IDIOCY!!!!!!

AZ Plate frame law

That law just went into effect in Arizona. If the plate frame covers the word Arizona in any part the fine is $135. The reason given is that, "in the event of a crime being committed if the officer cant see what state the car is from they cant properly identify the perp." The real reason is the red light and speed cameras that the communist government of Arizona has put in place to spy on the citizens. They cant make the photo radar ticket stick if they cant prove that it was from a particular state. I had to remove plate frames on 12 cars!

What REALLY gives the whole scheme away is the fact that the cactus on the AZ plate pretty much VERIFIES what state's plate it is! :lol (And, I don't see how they can fine ANY "out of stater" under this statute for obvious reasons.) So, your assessment is undoubtedly 100% correct, 'blood.

I dont mind laws that make sense but stupid laws drive me crazy. What is the percentage of time that a crime is committed in Arizona and the car can't be identified by the plate. Most of those crimes would be in a stolen car anyway. Now EVERY innocent citizen has to pay a price for the stupidity of a VERY few. Thats not "of the people by the people" and its certainly not taking the greater good of the public into consideration. Just one more example of the incredibly bad governing that has happened in AZ under governer Nepolitano who now is being considerd by Obama for appointment. What the Hell!!!

Phew, Now I feel better....thank you for letting me rant!

The license plate frame law makes sense, especially in the case of less than observant cops. For example, I was driving my Ferrari 360 from a meeting in Mesa, AZ back to my home. While some of my cars reside at my home in Phoenix, they are registered in Ohio, where I am a permanent resident. I was stopped by a Mesa cop recently who ran my plates while folling me and stopped me to inform me that I was under arrest because my drivers license was suspended (according to LEADS). Soon another Mesa cop arrived to assist. The two intellectual giants stood behid my car looking at my plates for about five minutes. Coming from a background in law enforcement, I asked the officer which state he used when running the plates, he quickly replied, "Why, Arizona of course!" I told him to look at the plates again and let me know what state the car was registered in. He walked back looked again and said, "Oh, it's OHIO!". I told him to run the plates again. He returned to my car to ask me, "Are you Tim Cantwell?" LEADS flagged me as retired law enforcement, and he apologized profusely. The bad part of the whole story is that he never asked me for I.D., a driver's license, registration, etc., etc. He also did not ask if I was carrying a concealed weapon (which LEADS would have told him). Both cops blew their procedure totally! It did not give me a very confident feeling about how well we're protected in Arizona! The moral of the story is that the police need to see what state the plates are from!

Did they address the clear plastic coverings that are meant to difuse/distort light so that the radar camera's can't make out the tag?

Saw quite a few of those in AZ over the holidays.

The Mesa PD pretty much has a rep for, shall we say, "laxness"? Those two should have IMMEDIATELY noticed - at the very least - that the CACTUS was missing on your plate...AND that the plate's color (and for all I know the letters/numerals as well) was wrong. 'Shouldn't NEED to be able to see the entire state's name at all to determine something was screwy.

I get the feeling your plates were "run" because of WHAT you were driving, and not for anything else. Just MHO based on my OWN similar experience down there.

Examples of less than stellar LEO stunts abound. "I have a friend" who has Washington State plate "USA-1". One day, while parked at a drive-in restaurant, my friend noticed a local LEO cruise by THREE TIMES very slowly eyeballing those plates. As expected - he pulled in and sauntered over to the car and informed my friend that those plates were illegal...BECAUSE????... ONLY THE POTUS CAN DISPLAY THAT PLATE!!! :rofl:rofl:rofl (At that time, POTUS used "US 1") The LEO was informed of that and requested to call "supervision" and get the straight skinny on it! But, what th'.........???

And I can't BEGIN to tell you how many PARKING TICKETS he rec'd from meter maids all over the state who wrote 'tickets on the "fake", red/white/blue, "Chevrolet USA-1" front plates so many people display(ed) on there cars. AND THESE METER MAIDS COULD CLEARLY SEE THE STATE NAME! IT WAS "CHEVROLET"!!! AND THEY STILL WROTE THE TICKET ON THE WASHINGTON STATE PLATE!!!

So, I'm not too sure state names being "blocked" by 'frames is the REAL pblm!

One of the only good things still un-molested in Michigan........we don't need to screw up the areo or looks of the front ends of our cars with a extra plate:banana

EP, you don't have any plate issues, right?

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!:lol

In Cali-fool-nia we have an opportunity to declare a vehicle as a non-op. Means we pay $15 a year to keep the registration inactive. I take advantage of this on some cars.,,,

I am sure in Washington there is something similar that Larry has discovered??? :-)

Nope. I just don't renew 'tabs on the cars I don't drive. :wink

(Ooooooooooooh, nuts. I just said the WROOOOOOONG thing. I just know it. Here it comes...)

Sad part of the whole thing is that according to the article I just read, it's only a 10 dollar charge for a seat belt ticket. :bs
