I've PM'd californiacuda about his earlier post indicating his windshield was removed without front fender removal. The glass shop he used has not yet replaced it, so I've asked him to post if the replacement with fenders intact is as easy as the (45 minute) removal.

Has anyone else had success in w/s R&R without removing fenders?

I know these glass shops have many special tools to assist in difficult installations. Not having to remove and replace fenders probably cuts $2,000 from this job as I've seen it quoted at $3,000 incl. glass here on the Forum.

This is like the fuel pipe replacement,no other way.
The real cost soup to nuts is between 5,500 to 6,000. the glass as usual isnt the big problem 750 to 1,400 depending on who you use and who you know. REMEMBER THERE ARE 2 DIFFERENTWINDSHIELDS!!!!!!! DEPENDING ON THE YEAR AND CHANGE OVER.THE ANTENA WIRE GOES DOWN THE GLASS ON ONE AND THE OTHER STYLE GOES SIDEWAYS! LOOK CLOSE YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN. There is no way the glass comes out without THE NOSE BASICALLY COMING OFF!!!!! AS USUAL SHOW ME PICTURES AND I WILL RETRACT IT, BUT FROM DBK AND MYSELFS MANY FORD CONNECTIONS, THERES NO OTHER WAY. IVE SEEN 4 DONE ALREADY. The spread in cost is pulling the nose apart. BELIEVE ME AT THAT PRICE ITS A BARGAIN!!!!!!!! :thumbsup GTJOEY 1314 WHO PURCHASED 3M FOR THE WINSHIELD FROM GINO:biggrin :thumbsup

This is interesting because the Rich aka the GT Guys and I were chatting about this topic a few nights ago and we both agreed that once the inner fender liners have been removed which can be ....... lets say awkward the removing of the fenders is truly very easy.

Plenty of painters tape and a nice place to set them once removed and there is little to worriy about. The installation is easy as well and even the inner fender liners go in MUCH easier when compared to being removed

Everyone I have talked to including the gt guys and gt tech tell me the fenders must come off.

Even "IF" there is a way to remove it without taking the fenders off I would never suggest it as the fenders are "O-2-Thin" and the odds are that upper surface damage would be caused during the process.

Relax; removing the fenders is not so bad.

Guys, All I've related is what californiacuda has previously posted and confirmed in a PM ... he says his w/s was REMOVED in 45 mins with the fenders in place. He has yet to have a windshield reinstalled and so, that may yet prove it's not possible to R&R the glass without fender surgery.

I've simply asked him to post when and if his glass shop is successful on the INSTALLATION.

and removal can be done a small piece at a time.....

windshield replacement

Had my windshield replaced by Tasca Ford. It only took a few hours and they did not take the fenders off.In fact they told me they have replaced several without removing any fenders.

I took my car back to Saleen to have my winshield replaced and they didn't remove the fenders? They told me they didn't need to and I think they only charged me about 1400 for the entire job.

I am glad to hear that several have had the glass replaced w/o removing the fenders. Until I saw the fenders off and participated in the removal process it sounded extreme to me too however having been through the process it causes me no concern.

On the the other hand I would like to see the process used to remove the windshield w/o removing the fenders so as to be able to evaluate the risk, both of secondary damage and the ability to properly seal the new windshield.

Now do not get me wrong; I have no doubt that it has hence can be done nevertheless the shorter path is not always the easier or best path.

This is a good thread as many experiences have been shared

Thanks for everyone's input.

This procedure will save our group of FGT pilots A LOT of money in the aggregate over the years to come as cracked or sandblasted windshields require R&R. It is also an example of why we should never say never as someone invariably comes up with a less costly and faster method that works. Just as was the case when I read the factory Shop Manual and was also told emphatically that the engine had to be pulled on my '55 Jag XK-140 Roadster to remove the bellhousing for a clutch replacement. We figured out a way to do it without cutting into anything and the job can be completed in an hour.

It should also give us comfort that this is how Saleen, who assembled our cars, replaces windshields.

I continue to watch this thread as I enjoy and appreciate being educated; I remain skeptical that this is a low risk approach nevertheless I remain open minded to the idea and have no doubt that it has been done.

Now having shared this what I would like to see next is a tech sheet or "how to" based on Saleen's approach to retain for the day that this process need be tended to.
