The Bumblebee GT.
Chip-YOU are to blame for this. Driving next to your beautiful GT all the way from Phoenix to Los Angeles.
And yes, I also blame Chip Beck!
There is an old saying in the car business, "Don't expect it to be popular used, if it wasn't popular new." This doesn't seem to be the case when it comes to the yellow GT. There are several reasons why yellow was the least popular and therefore least ordered Ford GT color both years of production. In the abstract, yellow is not a muscular or masculine color. It is the color of flowers and of women's Easter dresses. This color also presents a problem when you're buddies find out you just got a new car. One of the first questions is inevitably, "What color did you get?" Answering "yellow" will always result in a raised eyebrow. And finally, for whatever reason, yellow never seems to look as good in photographs as it does in the flesh. And as GTs are so rare, the only place most individuals had to compare colors prior to making their purchase, were photographs.
This was the case with me at least when I was trying to decide if I should buy a white car with blue stripes, or a red car with white stripes. I was not even considering a yellow car. But then Charley and I stopped into Roger Penske's dealership in north Scottsdale almost 2 years ago. Sitting on the showroom floor was a brand-new yellow/black stripes Ford GT. "Oh my gosh dad, look at that!" We had both seen white GTs, red GTs, blue GT's, and a black GT. Prior to this, I had seen a yellow GT only in photos and it did not interest me. But walking around that yellow car in Penske's showroom, it had a completely different effect. It was so stunning I went back the following day to see it again.
During the next 30 days Charley and I found and went to see a GT in every single available color. Perhaps some other color we had not seen in the flesh would be even more captivating. But nothing else raised the hair on the back of my neck like that yellow car did.
I wanted a 2006, and there were only "75" 2006 yellow GTs produced. The rarest 2006 color by far (the rarest 2005 color as well). I purchased mine before it had even been produced from Sugarland Ford in Texas. I never get tired of looking at it. When I take it to a Ford GT event it is often the only yellow car there. And it gets an unending stream of compliments, the most common being, "I hadn't seen an actual yellow GT before, that is beautiful."
One has to actually see a yellow Ford GT to appreciate it. And so my good friends Tim and Chris had six hours to view my yellow GT from all angles during our drive from Scottsdale to the California rally. The result was predictable. :banana:banana:banana:
With your purchase, that single car represents more than 1% of the total annual production of yellow GTs. Pretty cool 'eh. Welcome to the club.
