As I walk the halls of SEMA I'm always looking for Items or companies who make products for projects that I'd like to see for the GT. I've wondered how long it would be before someone would develop light weight high stopping performance Carbon Ceramic replacement rotors for cars that weren't produced with them.

As I approached the Stop Tech brake booth I see a Stop Tech rep holding a CC brake rotor and talking to a patron about it. I scurried over to hear the scoop.
I listened in on the conversation. They explained that these were not the typical CC brake rotors that are on the market etc.. They would stop with out being heated up like the race car versions etc.. When the other guy left I had a great lengthy conversation with Steve Ruiz ( Director of Engineering ) and another Stop Tech Rep John Swank. I told them I would love to see these available for the GT and that's when the conversation got real interesting.

As it turns out these CC rotors were considered by Ford as a production item for the GT. There were some concerns about potential future issues if the Calipers and rotors came from different manufacturers so the final development of CC rotors for the GT were not carried forward. At some point Stop Tech had worked with Niel Hanneman during the project.

The CC material that they are using is new to the automotive industry but has been used extensively in the commercial and military aviation applications.
I think we've all heard or have read that most of the CC rotors cars don't get to their braking sweet spot until you get some heat in them. This is not the case with this material. Lexus is going to use these rotors on their new High performance LF series of cars.

Steve stated that the weight savings of unsprung rotational mass would be around 15 lbs per corner which is phenomenal !! We discussed what it would take to get these built for the GT. They would need two things. Enough interest from Us to finish the project they started. And a live GT in the S. Cal area to they could do some final validation testing.( He said they would make it worth their while..)

I told then I would make a post here tonight to get things started. I also invited them here to post and supply more detailed info. I hope that's OK DBK & Bony??? If you're attending the SEMA show they would like for you to stop by and express your support if you're interested.

This would be a great Mod for all cars whether is just a road going daily driver or a track car you would benefit from theses rotors !!!

See post # 56 for updated comments and the new official Stop Tech contact...

Brian, great find. Can the stock calipers be used with different pads with these rotors. I am sure many Gt owner would be interested if the pricing was not obscene. I am sure they would be more than the FRPP rotors. I huge weight savings in unsprung weight.

:thumbsup:biggrin

A reduction of 60 lb. of rotating mass!! WOW!

Thank you for posting, I sent an email to Mr. Ruiz!:thumbsup

I was pretty excited after talking to them. I sounds like they just recently had some internal discussions about the GT program. I think with some good feed back here it wouldn't take much to get this thing moving!!! I think the GT stars were aligned....:biggrin

I've been chasing carbon rotors ever since I got my car back in 05', and I NEARLY went for a set of used carbon brakes from a Ferrari on eBay. (showes just how deserate I was).
This is just about the greatest mod news for the GT - EVER :eek :thumbsup:banana:biggrin:cheers.

Would they sell the discs seperate you think?? For me its no problemo to have some CNC brake hats made...

I will check them out. My car is available as the test platform. What is their booth number?

Thanks Jason, I sent him an email as one...
Ceramic is so cool... not as cool as CF, but still cool

I saw those, they looked super cool!

Thanks for being an "Eagle-Eye" Brian! Great find!

I stopped by and visited with them and asked questions. I was told that it was pretty much "a done deal" and that all they had left to do was some more testing before going into production. I was told that they would be available as rotor assemblies with pads that would work with our existing Brembo calipers or as complete kits with Stop Tech calipers (which they feel are superior to Brembo's). I was told that we would be made aware of their availability when the time comes through communication here on the FGT Forum. :thumbsup

Yup, looks very promising. I have agreed to be the test mule.

Great Bony, I can wait to hear your feedback on them!

StopTech makes some amazing products. I love the brake kit I have on my Stealth.

Any idea what they are going to want for those jewels?

Quarter a corner..

Quarter a corner..

That's kinda the number they threw out there. We may be able to orginize a group buy on these things. I plan on staying in touch with Steve. Bony was kind enough to offer up his GT so we should all thank him for that!!!

Hey C,
We missed you at the dinner !!!

Stop Tech said these rotors should go 100k miles. Here are some photos of their CC rotors on the new Lexus F model. These are an optional brake rotors for their new" AMG " line of Japanese built hot rod cars... My guess if conservative Toyota / Lexus is going to use them they must be pretty good...

Bony and I met with them on Thurs. We told them that the most popular kit would probably be CC rotors which would be mounted on alum. hats and pads to go with the rotor. We would use our stock calipers. They stated the rotors would probably go 100K miles but if you found a way to wear them out I'm sure they will sell just the rotors to mount on the hats. This CC material looks completely different they what I've seen on the Ferrari's and Porsche's.
