State of Confusion
First things first: This is an excellent website! Well done! :biggrin

Second: After picking up my new 2006 Black GT (from the dealer) I noticed that there is a scratch and touch up paint on the edge of the door where it meets the roof. (It’s where each of us has hit his head at least once). It is obvious when the door is open (because it feels rough to the touch) as you run your finger around the edge. When the door is closed, the touch up paint is not visible. The dealer will repair this but I’m afraid it could look worse if it’s not done carefully. Should I do nothing? Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? :ack

Any dealership with a good bodyshop and especially a good painter should be able to correct this problem easily.

Sounds like an easy fix.
You could always call one of the dent removal companies. They do a lot of touchup work for dealers, and I have to say, when you get a good one, they make it look like there was never anything there.

I agree. It sounds like an easy touch-up job. As you cannot see it with the door closed, they don't have to shoot the top of the door and worry about blending, etc. I think they would just tape off the top and underside of the door and spray/touch up the edge as needed. It shouldn't be too hard.

My GT has scatches

I've thought about this for weeks and I know that they don't have to shoot the top of the door but I worry about the incompetance of some of the workers. Sometimes a small problem becomes out of control. Also, do any after manufacture touch ups depreciate the cars value

if it was mine, knowing what i know about "minor touch-ups", i would let sleeping dogs lie !!!!
ps--where are you located in new jersey ???

I remember when I picked up mine that my wife read the paper work and it stated to go over your car and to report any flaws within a certain amount of time.. We had some paint issues and though it took some time... it was fixed properly by a certified Ford body shop. Glad I had it fixed, otherwise it would've bothered me to this day... Get it fixed so it's to your satisfaction... Or it'll bug you later down the road

If you can't see it with the door closed I would leave it alone! As an owner of a restoration shop I can guarantee you if they paint it they will have to paint the top of the door and it is pretty hard to blend the clear without a cutoff point, you might get lucky but I wouldn't bank on it. If you can't see it with the door closed that means 99% of the time you can't see it, if they paint the top of the door you may not be so lucky.

I completely agree with you.

If mine there is NO WAY that I would have the door repainted as a patch work quilt therefore the only other option would be to remove the window, the rubber surround, the door button assembly, the stripe if there is one, and then spot the corner or ??? and then clear coat the entire door.

I too have owned body shops and it is not a matter of "IF" a clear coat blend/burn it reappears it is a matter of when.

The reason for this is very easy to understand;

Paints of days gone past were solvent based such as lacquers and air/heat cured as such repaints or spotting in an area could be done because the same solvent could be used to soften the primary painted surface so the new paint would migrate with it however today's paints are chemical/heat aka catalyze cured as such once cured the solvents used during the spray process will no longer soften the paint thus allowing a migration of the new with the old paint.

So; leave it or if need be take a piece of 2-3000 sandpaper soaked in water and carefully sand the edge and then a little "3M Finesse" on a cotton rag after you have made the edge smooth will bring the shine right back. Now if you are not comfortable doing so have a detail orientated painter or good detail person do it. This is a situation that is noticed from time to time even after a fresh paint job has been completed.

Relax; enjoy your gal and let this be the least of your concerns.
