Mojave update

GTED. you are so cool! You gotta bring your car next time....
Well, let me tell you, the ending was no less dramatic although there was no way either Tom or I could answer back even if Tom or I wanted to. (We were not allowed to go over 205 with a 5mph allowance - although they allowed my 210.4)
But...there was one very seriously modified unlimited TT Viper trying to get it's pipes cleaned out before the end of the event. Most of their runs were in the low 200 range. On the second to last run of the event, they did get it running better and hit just over 222. :ack It was ironic because they had taken a picture of the driver of Big Red and I pulling on each side of the top speed plaque just minutes before. :eek
A Dodge? :ack Oh the humanity...

congrats on joining the 200 mph club everyone!!! are there more cars there than last time or less? i take it that only 3 GT's showed up this time....

also the motorcycle that went 255 mph with a 5400' density altitude has the potential to break the world mile record of a Hayabusa which holds the mile record at 269 mph at a much lower elevation.

i knew it was gonna be hotter than hell this year as September is way hotter than March. they should move the September race back to November in the future in order to compete with the air density in March......

i assume you guys had no winds?

Thanks Freddy! I am pretty certain there were only three GTs this time and about the same number of vehicles although they were spread out over two days. Runs were plentiful. There were winds but not too bad, 10 mph or so. The only problem was, they reversed the direction this time to gain advantage of the prevailing winds, and both days the wind came in from the other direction, meaning they were at best, a cross head wind... Oh well...

Terry - that viper probably would have went 230+ mph at the Texas mile which has a lower track elevation. that would be a world record for a viper. i take it that you and Tom both went 210.4 mph? i assume you let off at the end so as to avoid a breakout or is this all your car had? at sea level i bet your 210.4 mph run would be close to 220 mph. what kind of mods did that 3rd GT have and how fast did he go? i see that in another thread on this site that Tom is trying to get a "GT" only event set up for next year at Mojave. if he can get us a track length in excess of a mile i will add more boost to my GT's stock supercharger via a 10% lower pulley and re-tune it for a 150 shot of nitrous......

I thought that viper had a timing light error when I saw it go on the board. It had monster turbos and a very interesting body package. I spoke to them briefly after as they were loading and they were very happy. Griffin Racing was the group running the car and they had a pretty serious trailer set up so they are certainly focused for these type events, I forgot to ask if they are heading to Texas.
Tom was really close to the 210 number but kept coming in a bit short. I want to say he ended up at 209. Even with those he would stay on it for a bit after the timing boxes and was in the 215 range on his gps and data box so his car was still accelerating hard after. :eek
The third GT was a pulley tune car Kendall had done recently but it had a half shaft leak from track use and I think it started to give Ed issues so he was happy breaking into the 180s and headed home early. I think he picked up 10mph from the last Mojave mile just with those mods.
You should have come to this one Freddy, we missed seeing you.
For the GT only event - I think Tom has pretty much gotten a go ahead on longer runs - he is meeting with Mike in Vegas later this week to talk over possibilities. :thumbsup

A question on technique...

Has anyone ever completely taped up the front openning of our GT, i.e., the center vent for the radiator and the make-believe brake duct opennings, in addition to all the "normal" taped spots? If so, what do you think the mph gain would be at, say, Mojave with a pulley/tune car? I ask because the Shelby Team from LV brought a red/wht GT500 there, with the front openning completely taped up (and with a Whipple) ran 195 or 192 (don't remember exactly). When I asked the crew what their est of the delta would be between taped and untaped, I'm told it was between 7-10mph. Just curious as to the effect on the GTs.

thx

Ed.... the twins are waiting for you.... oh Ed..... you cannot resist.... you can try to break Skyrex's impressive record.... when do I tell Jason to put together another kit... or should I say 2 kits because I'm on the edge too!!

Regarding the GT500, it still has the ability to ingest plenty of air for cooling from under the front bumper and through the radiator. Not so in the GT. The underside is all sealed so if you tape up the front, we're going to overheat the car pretty quickly as we can no longer get any air through the radiator. Compounding this, the intercooler heat exchanger is up front as well and you don't want to block the air for that either!

Throughout the weekend, I honestly think we were generating more Horsepower in Tom's car than in Terry's car. However, Terry's car is lowered substantially from Tom's OEM height. Roughly speaking, I think that Terry is 1.5" lower in the front and probably just over an inch in the back. In my opinion, this was the difference in the two cars last weekend where Tom could have gained another 4-5 MPH (at least).

Kenall, you are a bad, bad man.......hahahaha. Having witness your work, and what Tom and Terry & Monica achieved, it doesn't take much to push me over the edge......

Makes sense on the GT500 venting from under the front bumper. As for Tom's ride height, I can just see him getting his car lowered before Sunday!!
