PARIS -- A French hospital says retired Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is in critical condition after hitting his head during a skiing accident.

The Grenoble University Hospital Center says Schumacher arrived in a coma and underwent brain surgery after sustaining a serious head trauma.

The seven-time F1 champion driver fell while skiing in the French Alps earlier Sunday and was transported by helicopter to Grenoble.

Terrible. :frown

After all he has done--a skiing accident. Awful.

But other report he is alert and not that serious. Hope they are right.

That was the first reports this morning. Reminds me very much of the D.E situation.

"Former Seven-Time Formula 1 World Champion, Michael Schumacher is understood to be severely injured after a skiing accident whilst at the French Alps located in Meribel. According to various sources, the incident occurred at nearly 3000ft at around 11am Local Time and emergency help was requested two to three minutes after the accident. The German was reported to have been wearing a helmet and his condition was not initially reported to have been life-threatening, however, new information has reached F1Today.net stating otherwise.

He was flown to a hospital in Grenoble at 11.53am and underwent various tests to examine his condition and has been listed as 'critical'. According to one source, Schumacher's is reported to be in a coma with a cerebral haemorrhage, though this has not officially been confirmed. Furthermore, it has been known that Gérard Saillant, the neurologist that aided him to his recovery in 1999 was flown in early this evening.

A Press Conference was expected to be held at 9pm, however this was later postponed. A spokesperson did release this statement earlier today "He was taken to hospital and is receiving professional medical attention. We ask for understanding that we cannot give out continuous information about his health.". Adding to the speculation that all is not well in the World of Schumacher is that Michael's brother and ex-F1 driver, Ralf's 'Official Website' now loads a black screen as opposed to the main page.

Various drivers have been tweeting and offering their support and well-wishes for Schumacher. His wife Corinna and two children, one of which was understood to be with Michael at the time of the incident are by his bedside."

if he lives that helmet saved his life....

Later reports were that he had a serious head injury but it was not life threatening. Was wearing a helmet, thank God.

Hope he does NOT have something in common with sonny bono.

Gentlemen,

Damn. Last year my son Charley sent me a text photo of himself with a group of friends snowboarding at Heavenly Valley. Charley was the only one not wearing a helmet. I called him with instructions to board down to the ski shop and buy one with my credit card. If I saw another photo without a helmet all of dad's funding would be cut off.

He's had two pretty bad crashes since then and that helmet has taken some hard blows. I'm glad he had it on. I certainly hope that Michael Schumacher is, or will be OK.

I asked my sweetheart Susan if she knew who Michael Schumacher is and was not surprised (she seems to know everybody) when she responded that she knew him via his work with HP where Susan is a Vice President.

Chip, I believe the gent you have pictured is Ralf, Michael's brother.

Yes, that's his Younger Brother Ralf.

Yes, that's his Younger Brother Ralf.

Ah, my eyes were not sharp enough to see the name on that award. Is Ralf also a driver? I've never heard anything about him.

Ralf was also a Formular One driver but not as successfull like his brother. Still he would circle around all of us in first gear :)

Find some more Information about him here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralf_Schumacher

Thanks Mal! Good read

During a business trip to Cologne Germany we took a field trip out to Kerpin and visited Kart Haus Schumacher. It is a go kart facility that was owned by Schumacher's family. Great facility with indoor and outdoor tracks. Supposedly this was were he got his initial skills honed down.

This tragic event reminds me of the Natasha Richardson saga. Only difference was the rapid emergent response and surgery. I suspected that they would have to remove bone flaps (part of skull) to allow room for brain swelling. This is confirmed in the above link. Hopefully these drastic measures work. Similar treatment was necessary when Cristiano da Matta (former CART and F-1 driver) hit a deer while testing at Road America in '06. He required a craniotomy and bone flap, survived and actually returned to drive ALMS.

Some positive news? Still sounds pretty grave but in the right direction.
