I'm not sure if anyone else has had this problem so I thought I would post up for the sake of shared information:

The fans inside of the "Big Mac" amplifier have been a bit noisy for some time now. As soon as I turn the key to the start position I can hear them crank up. I thought it was the fuel pumps at first but figured it out after closer inspection.

Today I decided to take the beast apart and see if the fans were replaceable. As is turns out, the entire unit was easy to disassemble and the fans were common parts for computer internals. This is good news because McInosh headquarters (aka McIntosh Labs) denies having anything to do with the construction of an audio system for a Ford GT. I would like to say 'I found it amusing' but in truth they were very irritating. SO, with the amp parted out and no hope of help from the manufacturer, I went to my local computer store and replaced the fans easy-peezy.

If anybody is interested I can upload pictures later. Yet another example of how easy the Ford GT is for us shade-tree mechanics. :thumbsup

Fubar, please post the pics and one of the Mods should make it a sticky for future reference. I see you had as much luck with the Mac people as I did a few years ago. They were bought up by one of the other stereo companies a few years ago so most of them don't have a clue as to what goes on. Trying to find a service center is really SOL.

Kindof odd for the Mac people to deny our existence. I saw a video a few months back where they were bragging about being part of the project.

Maybe Apple can service our "macs".

Here are the pix. The fan was the same series but a slightly different model so I jut trimmed off the rpm data line. The fan fit fine otherwise. I also soldered on the connector from the old fan because I was to lazy to run up to radio shack and get the proper fitting.

Fubar, you must be taking lessons from ShadowMan. Can't you get a hand model?

I haven't seen a circuit board using non-SMT parts for quite some time. Must be an OLD design. :confused

Great post Mark. When I saw your thread topic, I thought it was for people who really liked the McIntosh Amp! :lol I clicked on it because I wondered, "How enthusiastic can these audiophiles be about the Ford GT radio amplifier???". :confused

In any event, great pictures and a great resource thread you've put together here.

If you listened to less, cool 80's music the fans would not have blown out.
