Major crash at the Texas Mile

If you don't mind my asking what type of camera/lens was used and how close was your pit spot to the accident?

It is amazing that driver walked away. His first call after family should have been to whomever installed the cage on that car. He owes them big thanks.....and a few drinks.

Based on the data, looks like a Canon SLR model EOS 40D. Selected file resolution appears to be 1023 x 682 (But of course, that might have been a much lower resolution due to the attachment process - the original files may be larger - and potentially clearer). It'd be capable of roughly 5-6 shots per second (dependent also on speed of memory card used), and files at max setting can be 10mp. My guess would be a 100-300mm zoom lens was probably mounted on it. An extender may have been used.

Any Ford GT'ers have roll cages mounted in their street cars (non dedicated race car). I imagine the danger to a non helmeted driver in the tight confines of a GT would make roll cage design difficult or prohibited.

Looking at the photos, it appears that one of the car doors was open before the vehicle came to rest. Not a great scenario for meeting crash standards or surviving. Driver was really lucky.

Damn!

To answer the camera question my buddy that took the pic texted me this

I used a Tamron 18-270 on a crop body for an effective focal length of 430mm. It's my all purpose walk around lens. Wish I had brought my good stuff!!

We were pitted 50 yards from the 1 mile marker. The cones in the pics are the end of the shutdown. The wreck happened about 1/4 mile before that.

A bit off topic , but what was the fastest speed recorded at this Texas mile and was it by a FORD GT

I'm sure it was Mullet, and I think that was 224 mph.

That is one lucky dude. Jesus.

243.X by a Gallardo. I believe the second fastest was also Jonah's other Gallardo.

My 224.5 was the fastest Ford GT at the event.

Hey......The right hand outside rear view mirror still looks PERFECT!!

On a serious note, it's hard to believe somebody got out of that alive, let alone unhurt. I'm glad he was willing to cut his car up a bit to put that cage in it months ago. That decision saved his life last weekend.

Mullet , congradulations on your run of 224.5 , it is a shame to hear that a Lambo beat our GTs . especially after the battle of the supercars episode

Here is a stupid question , how did Rays car manage 269.9 mph in the mile and then this time the GT speeds were not close to that , no disrespect to any of the GTs at the Texas mile , I am just curious as to the differences

Ray's car was making oh, about 1000 more hp to the wheels.

Was that the last run he made in that Orange Gallardo?

Definitely was the LAST run he made in THAT Orange Gallardo!

Glad everyone is okay!

Not taking away any respect from the FGT TT's that ran last weekend, Ray's built GT is very much another breed of beast in regards to design, HP, and well...budget. ;)

Ray's car will do circles around the gallardo and still traveling @299 mph

Looking at the photos, it appears that one of the car doors was open before the vehicle came to rest.

Apollo and I were told at the scene that the jaws of life WERE used to extricate the driver - the first cuts of which *could* have been to get the door off.

Number 13.......hmmmmmm.

I think they said they had to use the jaws to cut him out because he did have his leg or foot pinned inside. The other thing to note was they said rescue was on scene and using the jaws within 30 seconds....

We were also told that they are changing some of the rules for the 190+ class after this event. Not because of this incident but just to improve safety. I did manage to drag one of the items out of them which is that you will no longer be able to use seats that don't have harness fittings through them. I believe he said the changes wouldn't effect our cars.

Now having seen the crash, I don't think the chute did anything wrong.
