Interior blower motor squeak!

After a two day 1,300 mile round trip from Phoenix to Fresno and back the AC blower motor was really driving me nuts! The squeak is present at all fan speeds.

How can I fix it? Or can it be fixed? I'm sure a new one is cheap, but I'd rather repair if possible.

This is a component as furnished by Vintage Air for these gals and as for whether it can be fixed; maybe however in my experience the shaft has no bearings; only a bronze bushing as such if it goes bad lubrication will quiet it for a period of time and yet replacement is likely.

I would suggest that you call them first as I suspect they will be able to quickly confirm whether attempting a repair rather than moving towards a replacement is even worth while; their number is (800) 862 6658.

Now I have not replaced this piece however it does not appear to be a scope and magnitude project.

FYI the part number is #4G7Z 19805 AA with a retail price just under $200.00

Thanks for the information Shadowman, I'll be sure to take plenty of photos of the R&R when I get to it.... which absolutely must be before any drive of significant distance... its like having a cockpit full of hitchhiking crickets :lol

You are welcome

In the mean time you could always unplug the blower or simply remove the fuse "IF" it is a solo action fuse.

Empty,
To Bill's credit, it must have taken him 10 minutes to write the reply as he needed to look up the part #, so Mr. Bill here actually started responding BEFORE the problem was posted. :thumbsup

Did we get a resolve on this?

Sadly, the answer is no. But only because of lack of time to call Vintage Air.

Finally emailed Vintage Air, this was the suggestion;

"The blower wheel may have shifted on the shaft and is rubbing the outer
housing. You may be able to take the motor and wheel out and re-position the
wheel on the shaft. Make sure you inspect the wheel to make sure it isn't
cracked causing it to expand with speed and causing the noise."

I removed the leather panel and the steel "knee plate" to get a look at the blower assembly, it looks like I'd have to pull the dash at least partially out in order to remove the blower motor and fan. :frown I decided to apply some sound deadening material as a first attempt to silence things. The product is from a local company called Second Skin, about half the cost of Dynamat with the same performance according to the owner.

I wrapped the motor with their "damplifier pro" product & applied the same to the knee plate + "Luxury liner pro". I thought I would hear a significant reduction in the squeaking, but I was wrong.

THE SQUEAK IS COMPLETELY INAUDIBLE. I'm amazed. And it's completely reversible if I ever want to return it to 100% factory configuration.

Great fix. Do you think if I wrap my exhaust with it to make it inaudible. :lol

Some motors have and need cooling and have vent holes with and without internal fans to cool them. Did you check the blower fan for the absence of cooling vents before wrapping it? If it need cooling and you covered the vents, it may stay forever quiet.

Ahhh just drill a hole in the motor housing, small enough to get a WD-40 nozzle through there, pull the trigger and turn the fan on "HI" that squeak should be gone..

After a minute or so :biggrin

Well....

The celebration was short lived. :frown

The squeak is back! However, only about 15% of what it was.

There are no vents, at least that I could see or feel around the can, there is a small portion of the motor I wasn't able to wrap so there could be a vent there.... but I doubt it.

I certainly wouldn't want it "forever quiet" :lol

That is one of the fixes google dug up for me! According to the thread it worked and has continued to work with no issues! I'd hate to do that though, it needs to be repaired (or dampened) properly.

Has anyone had the motor and fan out? I'm curious if it's as involved as it looks. :confused

Yes it is very involved you need to remove the heater core and evaporator core housing for access.

That's terrible, can you imagine the mess through the dash vents :eek

Good luck in getting it fixed Jeff.
