How many cars have had the half-shaft bolt failure?

One can tell some of you fellas have not had much exposure to exotic cars! No other manufacturers of high end cars go out of their way to warn customers. Hell, Ferrari had a known problem with their alternators burning out on cars from 1992 onwards, and they kept owners like me in the dark until I had to go ballistic on them. Many Ferrari V8 cars would quit for no reason when they were hot, at least the ones in the 80's. For another example, the 360 Modenas had a problem with their cam shaft belts giving up.

Likewise on the 997 Porsches, in the first year for the Carrera 'S' with active suspension (2005) they installed the rear suspension bushings in backwards from the factory; and so the car was evil handling when running in 'active suspension' mode on fast corners. But Porsche never officially admitted this, and the dealers dragged their feet on doing the right thing. On the Lambos, the clutches burn out on the new E-Gear models after about 5000 miles of normal city stop & go traffic. The beat goes on.

Don't want to beat a dead horse here, but really - rather than just keep complaining about Ford's apparent inaction, owners should be taking action themselves. I strongly recommend you all take your cars in for a full safety check after putting a few miles on. I'd be very surprised if you can't get the bolts and washers replaced for free, as I did. And given I had some other loose parts on the car, especially the rear axle bearing nut (which was found by my very diligent and conscientious tech, to whom I am grateful) there could be some other hidden p[roblems you need to take care of. And BTW an oil change after 500 miles is also a very good precaution.

You owe it to yourselves - and particularly your passengers - to have the safest car possible. Take charge and you won't have any regrets. www.bullseyeresearch.com

Indeed Mr. Red Rocket. If you are concerned, simply take your car to a dealer you are comfortable with and they will replace for you under warranty...

I'm 06 #1160. From some of the break vs. ok serial numbers listed in this thread, looks like mine are the hardened washers.

I sure hope so. I'm like most here, can't believe Ford has moved to an immediate recall/repair.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I have posted before the "Project Manager" at the plant checked the serial number of my transaxel and said that it had the improved output flange retaining washers. My GT was built April 30 06.
Ford obviously has a list of the affected transaxel serial # but why they have not made this information public is anybody's guess

How fast were you going when it broke

I was doing about 20 mph the halfshaft only wants to come out when you shift. I think the faster you are going it wants to pull the shaft in and when you let off the power or shift it comes out.
At lest that was what I felt.

You know, I was about to buy a new F350, 4x4, Crew Cab, all decked out for over $50K, but if they won't take care of my almost $200,000 car, I think I'll wait and rethink. I don't want to support bad business decisions with my hard earned dollars.

Dealers

I think it depends somewhat on the dealer. I broke mine months ago on the passenger side and they fixed it within two days. They called and asked if it was okay to keep it another day as they had ordered the other side and it was going to be an extra day before they got them. The shop foreman is the only one they allow to work on GT's and they handle them like they own them. 05 vin 1526

My car is going in on Monday to Burch Ford in La Habra for the transaxle bolt replacement. Mike Hogan ordered the parts on Monday from Ford and are promptly taking care of a possible future failure on warranty,no questions asked.
GREAT DEALER, GREAT SERVICE!!!!!!!!

CP- '06 #812. Right next to yours.
My buddies late 06 (Tungsten) just had this problem. Is there a permanent fix for this? He has also already spoken to Ford and they told him that he already has the upgraded parts, so much for that fix...

axle bolt breakage

Several more data points to add.

My '05 #1245 and a friend's '05 #991 have both had the dreaded axle bolt failure leaving us both stranded!

Unfortunately, you only think you have. I suspect that you are looking at the 6 bolts that hold the hub halves together. The failure is not with these 6 bolts and never has been. To inspect the failure area, you DO have to remove these 6 bolts to find the two bolts that attach the hub to the transaxle.

Has anybody came out with a "permanent fix" such as lock wires or something of that nature? If so who sells these bolts/kit or is this something that would need to be done on our own. I imagine it would not be easy drilling hardened bolts.

A yellow GT here in temecula had a problem, so the dealer is looking into changing mine under warranty.

I got my bolts redone last week as a precautionary measure. I have an early '05 (#421) and the retaining bolts and washers were not the hardened heat-treated ones. There was a little bit of indention on the washers but when the bolts were taken out they weren't very tight...hard to tell if undertorqued, or if they had started to back out. My car has 2500 miles on it and no track days or real hard driving.
The axle to hub nut on one side was loose also.
Anyway, got my mods done (Ida exhaust, tranny cooler, cold air kit) in addition to 1st oil change. Getting the I-pod connection installed Monday. Should be good to go for Indy!

NOTA4RE:
Dang it!!!!!! You're absolutely right! That's exactly what I was looking at. I shudda known things were lookin' too good.
Looks like a call to the dealer is in order.
BUT, if others have had their "upgrades" puke too ...'zactly what will be gained by DOING the darn upgrade anyway????? :confused Opinions? ( If this pblm is an uncontrolable "lottery" situation, my bet is this'll be the only lotto wherein MY numbers come up. :bored )
Do these stinkin' things generally grenade pretty much only on "hard use" cars ... or do they just seem to "dump" for the heck of it whenever/wherever regardless of the type of driving?
Thanks for the heads up, "NOTA".
( 'Guess I shudda kept my Yugo. :rofl )
