GT too super for the streets?

Where oh where do you drive this car? I know the answer is everywhere, but in my town this just can't happen. I can't drive to work or the employees and customers would hate me. The area with most of the restaurants is right next to the park which is full of skateboarders. So that's out. So I have taken it to Lowes and even a supermarket. But then I got nervous about carts and that was out. So now I can race from red light to red light, taking about 2.1 seconds to exceed the limit. Not terribly fun.

I feel like I have a Barret M82A1 (.50 sniper rifle http://www.barrettrifles.com/rifle_82.aspx) and I'm playing paintball.

So lets head out on the highway and go somewhere with fun roads. Anyone else feel like a chump driving anywhere near the speed limit? But how long can you drive over it and not get busted? I've seen at least three cops pull out right in front of me to get guys that passed me (not in my GT). Not a chirp from the detector. Once your up to speed you might as well be driving a pickup. What do you do, take every exit for the joy of the on ramp acceleration? Four seconds of joy? 5 seconds to 25+ over the limit?

I could take it to the track, but once I did that with my Vipers I was ruined for street driving. How many seconds is your foot at full throttle or full brake? On the track it's great as you can do that all day long. (especially if your an instructor...) But then you have to deal with the engine overheating, the brakes overheating and the tires not being there for the drive home. Plus I live too far from a track now.

I fell like I have a supermodel in the bedroom, but she has an incurable STD. Sure I could take her out for a drive, but...

If I really have fun driving, I will end up in jail. I see cops on every trip. Even on the roads in the middle of nowhere. They will turn around for this car. And just how fast do you have to be going for them to seize the car forever??? I took it to the dealer the other day and almost hit redline in 2nd gear. That's what, 55 over? I wasn't even trying, just not paying attention.

I know. I'm pathetic. I hate myself for not driving this thing more. But it is such a waste to poke along near the speed limit. I don't want to own a car I don't drive, but I just can't seem to find a place to drive this one. Where do you drive this car like it's meant to be driven and how do you avoid the cops?

My daughter and I were laughing our ass off at the anal owner's who were having to drive in the rain (especially after a $400 detail). Only difference in my car in the rain is that it runs cooler. I could see & feel those butt%$$% puckering. Just isn't worth it to me. I talked to Cleo ( Shelby's wife). She said Carroll woud love to know that some of the cars are actually driven (their intended purpose). What are most of you guys doing?...trying to keep the car in pristine condition for your sons, daughters, sons-in-law or others to inherit? I am sure they will appreciate the mint condition car they have inherited. We are going to the Sonic drive-in now and eating in the car. CHEERS!

I simply love running out of milk at home and having to do the 3-4 mile run to the supermarket. Sure I park out in the boondocks and walk the whole 1 1/2 minutes so I'm not next to anyone, and of course I get back to the car and someone is oogling it. If I have a 50% chance of getting out and back home dry, the GT is a perfect ride, for any reason.

MDT, don't panic. Try to take it places. I call ahead to restaurants and ask about valet parking, that: 1. I can park it myself, and 2. that I can see if from the restaurant when I'm seated.
I take mine to my kid's baseball and football games, and yes, I park it AWAY from trouble. That doesn't mean the car won't draw crowdsl; it does. But you can drive it locally if you're willing to be careful.
As far as high speed cruising or highway hijinks, that's going to happen with a car that goes 200mph+ from the factory. Just don't do anything stupin and get caught.:thumbsup

A large part of the joy in owning this car is not in actually driving the speeds it's capable of, but enjoying the exclusivity of it. It's pride of ownership. Enjoying other peoples reactions to it. Answering questions, sharing rides and letting kids sit in it. Modifying it, customizing it, tweaking it to fit your personality. Being king of the hill at car shows, drawing the crowd away from the other exotics. Having people ask permission to take pictures of it and then wanting you to pose with the car. It makes you feel like a rock star. I drive it to work a couple of times a week, weather permitting and my employees and customers have never shown me anything but excitement over it. People stop all day long just to take pictures and ask questions. And I enjoy answering them.


But then when you do get the opportunity to unleash the beast....WOW! That's when you separate yourself from the poseurs.

Take it to one of the many open road events or mile races so when someone asks you how fast you've had it, you can honestly answer "180, 190" or my personal goal, 200+.

I personally enjoy driving this Barrett .50 caliber. Even if I don't get to shoot it very often, nobody questions the fact that it's a bad mother*****r!:thumbsup

When I first got it, it stressed me out a little. But today on the way back from the beach I stopped at a Chili's for lunch with my wife parking in a nice end spot.....of course she was driving one of our other cars and gave me a nice "block" on the passenger side to keep away the door crushers. :lol

Take it on a couple of overnighters (weather permitting) and while the paranoia may never go away it will lessen.

But thanks to this Forum I have learned one useful paranoia. When we checked in last night, no valet parking for me....the valets showed me to a great protected spot, got a great tip, and had a really fun chat with me about the car. Texas nailed it when he referred to all the fun interactions you have with people. I don't like to stop for gas unless I have time to chat with people. :biggrin

As for the speed thing, buy the best radar detector you can get and take your chances like the rest of us. There are worse things than a speeding ticket. :cheers

drive it, enjoy it, if something happens fix it, a door ding can be fixed and dent can be repaired its tough to get your mind around this concept at first, it was for me, I still look after it but try not to ruin my night just because my gt is parked in the parking lot. as long as you dont wreck it all other stuff is repairable, if you really want to drive it, then its going to see wear and tear, a little ding and scratch is just part of it. I would be more worried about a bad accident that completly damages the car, not the little stuff.

'Longest time it took to enter a restaurant after parking the GT 40 feet from the door was 7 minutes.

'Longest time it took to actually get back into the GT and DRIVE AWAY was something bordering on 45 minutes.

Only reason I know this is because I got curious as to how long these things were actually taking and I started to keep track just for the heck of it! :lol

It took me that long or longer during the drive back from Rally III, because the flapper valve in my filler neck broke off and was obstructing the flow! I used to live close to a middle school and once pulled the car out just when school let out. It took a very long to get back out of the driveway with a huge crowd of students. One would think they saw Hanna Montana!

No radar detector? I've found several stretches of interstate that are empty on Sat & Sun mornings. About 35 miles worth. On the trip up I note if there any Leo's, and punch it on the way back. If someone comes by and wants a ride, I've got an 8 mile loop on the interstate. No cops on the way up, punch it on the way back.
