Okay, the next Mojave mile is coming up and I would like to have something on board to track my runs. I don't really need a GPS as all my other cars have one, so all I am looking for is one that is accurate at measuring top speed. The other features are mildly interesting to me. What would you guys recommend? If you could put model name and price with your replies I would appreciate it. Also, I remember reading in other threads about a Vbox. What is that exactly and what do they do?

I want my own proof about how well my new TT does at flexing its muscles. :lol :driving:

BTW......am I the only one struggling with the new Forum format?? I do not do well with change. :confused :lol :cheers

Driftbox or Performance Box made by Racelogic that also makes the higher end Vbox line.

My understanding is drift box or performance box have more accurate GPS measurements of speed than a typical Garmin or Tom Tom due to more frequent measurements. They also have software that easily allows 0-60mph, 0-100mph et..... and multiple other calculations.
In contrast, a standard GPS (Garmin or Tom Tom like) also provide speed, though perhaps not quite as accurately. At least they'll help you find the track as they have navigation.
The Performance box is about $450 (I've been looking at getting one)

- also - I tend to have a hard time adjusting to new format too. I still have the same 5 yr old cell phone. Oh well...

Do you guys continue to listen to Lawrence Welk?

Ouch!

Any GPS will serve your purpose so pick one based on its usefulness for other activities (running, hiking or whatever) or choose solely on price. Most current GPS units update at least five times per second. This is actually more important the slower you go. All the manufactures buy their chips from the same suppliers so the raw position location performance is equal.

Search for a post from Centerpunch, Racelogic uses a different method to calculate speed and is more accurate than most, if not all, navigation type GPS units.

Hi Skyrex,
I have an extra Garmin with window mount you are welcome to use. I put it on the left side of the dash where you look for mile marker at Mojave. I should be there with you - at least for the first day, or I could leave it with Kendall...

I call my GPS "Rosa" as I bought a $50 GPS.... Came in a white box. The voice is fixed as Spanish and it costs $100 to upgrade it to english.....

Key lessons learned - you get what you pay for!

Thanks for the offer. :thumbsup

I am going to pick up a performance box though......and a better video camera. This next event needs to be documented in full and on multiple levels. :biggrin

Hope you change your mind and stay for both days...... :cheers

Great, glad you have the one you need picked out. What camera are you getting? I have been thinking of getting one of those.
Depending on if we are going to the Rally, we would need to be on the road late Saturday. I still have not worked out schedule and finaces completely to see if I can make both events.
