F1 2014

Australian GP Practice on NBC Sports right now.

Hate to say it, these just do not sound good going around the circuit.

'dropping' cylinders.... :thumbsdow

The old V6 Turbo cars from the 80s sounded waaaaaaay better, and they managed to do so at a much lower RPM.

Cosworth DFV's, Ferrari and Matra V12's from the early 80's just stand as aural benchmarks.

Was just gonna post engines sounded horrible in practice, but you beat me to it DBK. Hard to pinpoint the sound, kinda like a lawnmower go-kart at high rpm. Very uninspiring. The commentators were saying they liked it, they had to be paid to say that.

I found that amusing too. Will Buxton was selling the "I love it, it's so sci-fi!" way too hard.

I thought this was interesting, a Red Bull rundown on the changes from 13 to the 14 cars:

Buxton may think the "whizzing, banging and pops" sound exciting "in the flesh" but on air they sound, to be charitable, flat as a dog passing gas! Best sound of the day was Sahara Force India principle Vijay Mallya saying on camera, "The noise of Formula 1 is gone, we need that Formula 1 noise".

My rear exit headers on the GT sound a hell of a lot better - oh well....

It sucks, this is what happens when you hand racing over to environmentalist.

There is no sound like a high displacement V8 - they rumble your guts. But the sound of any engine running at 8000+ RPM regardless of how many cylinders is a song. When you hear one of the Ferrari V12s on the track it is cool... I don't think anyone can deny that.

Couldn't agree more! I don't really care to watch a battle of attrition(5 engine rule) and fuel mileage. Decreasing displacement, lowering rpm and fuel consumption I worry have neutered the cars to what end? So we can say its a "green" sport, guess what the greenies are going to hate it no matter what you do. Bernie better hope the on track racing is extraordinary because the cars so far aren't dazzling me so far.

Rookie Mini Magnussen starting 4th ..... pretty amazing!

I do think the racing will be better. Despite the sound being odd and underwhelming, it's pretty clear the drivers are actually fighting those cars every inch of the way right now. It's been a while since it looked like more than slot cars on a track. Lots of patches of black rubber being laid out of turns, lots of fishtailing. Should make it much easier to pass, especially with the DRS changes. All that extra torque is making these guys drive a lot more precisely.

I never understand why they make stupid changes, and then immediately change them again. They're already going to change the noses in 2015? Why make them look ridiculous in the first place!?!?

And kers, according to the red bull video is now 3x seconds per lap, vs last years 6 seconds

Have to admit qualifying was pretty good. The cars sure look like a handful. I'm sure the rain was a big factor but in any case fun to watch. I do enjoy watching guys of that skill level struggle on the edge of every exit. These things would be lethal in the hands of a mortal.

To get a sense of how hairy these cars used to be, and may be now with turbo and less nannies, one should go back and look at clips of Senna driving the McLaren Hondas in the 80s. His hands were always moving to keep the car going where he wanted it to go....looks like he is driving on ice sometimes as he is on the edge...or for mortals over the edge on traction.

Gentlemen,

F1 cars have been butt ugly for years now and I think it takes a lot away from the sport. It's like watching a couple ugly freaks dork in a porn flick. Who cares how good they are performing the act if they are unpleasant to look at? Indy cars are still beautiful like F1 cars use to be. The stupidly narrow rear wings are painful to look at and the freak show noses make Barbra Streisand's schnoz look pretty by comparison. Now they have destroyed the sound as well.

The most beautiful F1 cars IMO are the pre wing Lotus's of the early 60's.
