Exhaust Tips

Hello to all!

I'm a new owner of '05 GT (2 weeks). Thanks to all the data in the forum, I have learned a tremendous amount about my car and answered a myriad of questions that have surfaced. Thanks to you all for your contributions of expertise and experience!

Has anyone ever 'bulked up' the whimpy exhaust tips with any aftermarket overfit tubes? I like the sound of the stock muffler and prefer to keep the exhaust system stock, but the 'bean counter' exhaust tips don't do the rest of the car justice. Thought a quick, inexpensive add might be stainless, chrome or black overfit tubes with either slant cut or rolled ends. A ton of aftermarket tips out there but I don't seem to finds any with an inlet id of close to the 3.25 in od of the stock tips. Short of having some fabricated I though someone might know of an off the shelf application that will work.

Thanks

Chris

Hello Chris,

Congratulations on your acquisition. I don't have a suggestion for the exhaust tips except perhaps to wait a while because your tastes may change. When I first got my FGT I thought I would leave it stock but after seeing other cars and talking to owners (mostly on the forum) I opted for an Accufab exhaust and Ford Racing pulley.

Enjoy your fabulous car (as if it was possible not to).

Aloha,

Dave

Hi Chris,

Congrats on your purchase. As you noted, at 3.25", the stock tips are by no means wimpy. Additionally, they are already stainless although I suspect that you prefer a polished stainless look. The stock muffler is both hefty and a strong heak soak for both the engine area and the nearby air inlet box. Replacing it can give you better tips, a 40lb weight savings, and improved air inlet temperatures.

Be careful with any slip-ons that you may find as it wouldn't be too hard to melt the plastic surround that protects the bumper.

I have the Heffner cat back system. The tips look the best IMO and fill the surround very well. The tips are double walled to help with the heat. No surround problems to date. Heat rises and the exhaust system expands when hot moving the tips up higher. So when installing an exhaust I position the tips slightly lower than center. They will be centered when hot and minimize the potential for heat damage.

Welcome Chris.

I notice that you're in SoCal. May I suggest that you join the SoCal boys at Cars & Coffee Saturday mornings in Irvine. That way you can see for yourself what we all have done to our rides in the way of exhaust set ups. I would venture a guess that every type is represented amongst us.

Cheers :wink

If you like the sound of the stock muffler you will probably like the Ford Racing (Borla) muffler. I think it has the best looking exhaust tips and it isn't too loud. I polished mine and it looks great with the Ford Racing logo.

Chris, to get at the current tips to replace, you'll probably have to pull the muffler, so may as well replace it. Accufab, Heffner, Stillen all make nice X-H replacements, but I went with the Ford Racing (Borla). No drone whatsoever and nice stainless tips. BlackIce is right about placing them lower than center at the original mount. Full headers are made by several places as well, including Ford Racing.

I have been enjoying my 2005 GT Red/white in Dubai, and would love to get some serious sound out of the mufflers while driving on the roads.
Would the Full system from Ford Racing be way too loud?
I have also been considering the Stillen muffler plus cat replacement box - is that a better way to go?
Also, I want just a slight engine power increase to avoid harming the engine while enjoying it every weekend, I cannot find the Pulley upgrade on the Ford Racing website. Can someone help? Do I need to retune the engine, I don't really want to deviate too much from factory.

Download the 2009 Ford Racing Performance Parts Catelog in pdf format. You'll find all the parts they have on pages 32-33 (I think). The Pulley upgrade is called "Power Upgrade Kit", p/n M-2005-GT.

I've always been impressed with the Porsche GT tips. They look like jets. You can picks these up from Porsche for $8,700 (wholesale). You'll need two of course. Enjoy your Ford for it's many many benefits.
