Dodge Challenger vs. Shelby GT500

$40,095 vs. $41,930 (I'm not sure if that includes the tax, so we'll say $43,230)
425 hp vs. 500hp
Gas Guzzler tax
$2100 vs. $1300
Auto vs. 6 speed Manual

This is interesting information. The $38k MSRP they were talking about was before they added in the GG tax. The Challenger being slapped as a Tier 4 gas guzzler means one thing: it's going to weigh a TON. The $2100 guzzler tax means it gets between 18.5 and 19.5 on the combined cycle. The car will definitely weigh over 4000 lbs. By how much remains to be seen, but it's looking like it will be at least 2-300 pounds heavier than a GT500. A 425hp 6.1L Charger SRT8 receives the same penalty, and that car weighs 4160. I'd assume this will be the same.

So essentially you have a car with 75 less horsepower and several hundred more pounds for virtually the same price.

In the 2 door Muscle car battle, I'd say Ford is well ahead on this one. The GT500 will be a LOT faster than a standard Challenger SRT8.

(and we'll see what Ford has in store for MY09)

The problem with your analysis of the 500 Dave is that most dealers still won't order it the way you want it. I was lucky but even with just HID's and ambient lighting my MSRP is still around $45K...Most are at the $47-48K...Lots of mods for 7K difference.

The Challenger also will have a 6 speed in the SRT8 but it won't be out till 09..which is fine...they don't offer plum crazy in it yet and thats the color I want.

My 500 is on the truck and should be at the dealer this week :) already have the pulley ordered for it...The best solution is just buy one of each...hehehehe

You'll need the 7k to make up the weight and power differences :biggrin

Ford dealers will learn to order the cars the way people want soon enough. 10k units per year for at least four years and they'll start piling in inventory eventually. I think the Challenger only has something like 2k worth of available options, so it will be cheaper, but it will also be slower and less athletic.

Both are cool, I'm just pointing out that there's an awful lot of bitching about the weight/power equation for the GT500, but it's Kate Moss compared to the Challenger, with a big power advantage to boot.

Challenger/Convertible. Blue with white interior. Don't care how fast it is...I got a GT for that. :biggrin

There are 2 guys here locally trying to out bid each other on the 1st Challenger coming into the local dealership...and MAAAAAAAAAAN! Are these two "certifiable"! I mean, they are BOTH just totally NUTS!!! They're dang close to the 6 figure mark already - if the salesman I spoke to can be believed! FOR A $40k CAR??? :ack (I think it's now obviously become wunna those things where they have BOTH decided, "I'm NOT going to let him beat me outta this car!" And the dealer, you can bet, is just LOVIN' IT! )

Aaaaaaaaaaaah, ya have to love people who just, "'Gotta have it! 'Gotta have it at any price!" It's so much fun to sit back & watch 'em just to see how silly they can get! :lol

You have obviously TIVO'd the Barrett-Jackson auctions on Speed. :lol

I agree horsepower wise the challenger is going to have issues. With the pulley you get 550 at the wheels on the 500. The Hemi is naturally aspirated so your into a whole different set of costs to upgrade that next 100+HP without Nitrous.

On the Fords I don't think anyone has been able to confirm the 09 build but they only did 10K for 2 years..I think it was 6 the first year and 4 this year..so alot more than GT's but at a price point that you have alot more buyers at.

They have come down to MSRP now but its hard to find a dealer that has an allocation left that they can or will change the order on.

Trust me, I stake my reputation as a guy who knows meaningless information that there will definitely be a next GT500.

Sal I'm going to merge the two usernames so the posts from both appear as Germanoracing.

Thanks,
Dave

That thing maybe plum crazy but I'm green with envy :biggrin

Sweet.... That thing gota Hemi ?!!!!!

Personally, I have no intention of buying a Challenger. I still don't get why people say it will have an effect on GT500 prices. Apples and Oranges as far as I am concerned. Is the Ford dealer going to take less for a GT500 if you tell him you are going to walk and go buy a Challenger? Anyhow, no one can debate the price of the two cars until we see what kind of ADM they have on them. If you think there won't be any, wake up. As for GT500's, I ordered mine for 5k over with the color/options I wanted in June. Msrp deals can be had if you search around but possibly not for an ordered to spec car. Potential and ease of modification has to go to the GT500. 725+ rwhp is possible with a blower swap and supporting parts. It's gonna take a bunch of spray to make that with a Challenger. In the end, buy what you want and don't worry about what anyone has to say about it. You guys here already have GT's anyway....

Brian...
That's an ALL AMERICAN RACER version, designed to be the counterpart of the Z28 and Boss 302. Yes it is super sweet.

Sweet.... That thing gota Hemi ?!!!!!

No Hemi.... > 340 6 pack......

1970 AAR Cuda/Challenger T/A
are the only Mopars that came with a 340 6 pack

I drove my Ford GT down to my local Southern CA dealer to place a deposit on the '08 Challenger SRT-8. And was told by the salesperson, and then subsequently the sales manager, that "We're not taking any deposits at this time - we don't even know what the price is yet." and also, "You do know that the Challenger will be selling for over window."

Not sure if they saw my car, and it was completely empty in their newly renovated showroom, on a weekday morning.

'Pretty much EXACTLY my experience, including the empty showroom, up here, Randy ('cept ,of coarse[!], I wasn't driving my ...well, you know:bored).

'Was told the SAME things ...except they knew what the sticker was (on 12/3). They were totally noncommittal on what their premiums were going to be. BUT they stressed over & over how "limited production" these cars will be ...'laying the mental groundwork to blunt the shock from their premium info down th' road no doubt. To that they added the story of two local's who were presently involved in a "bidding duel" over the FIRST one scheduled to arrive at that dealership, and they said those guys have bid the car up to just short of 6 figures (at that time)!

And I told THEM some people are just completely nuts...

(Oh, and trust me! They SAW your car!:rofl:cheers:thumbsup)
