Chris Amon

For those among us who followed racing in the sixties, this is a sad time. Chris Amon, age 73, has passed. Famous today for being the best driver never to have won a GP race, that simply diminishes the importance of winning a F1 race more than it does Chris Amon's ability. In a year that we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford's win at Le Mans, let's remember that New Zealanders Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren were Ford's winning drivers. A testament to the man's ability was that the following year Amon drove arguably the most beautiful race car ever made, the Ferrari 330-P4, to lead Ferrari to a 1-2-3 sweep at the Daytona 24 Hours. Later he won the Italian 1000KM of Monza and finished second at the British BOAC 500 to clinch the International Championship of Makes for Ferrari over Porsche.

Some of you may remember that James Garner wore a duplicate of Amon's helmet in the movie Gran Prix. There was a "little brother" quality to Amon that endeared him to fans and belied his ability in a very tough sport. Rest in peace.

Rest In Peace Chris, Nice Tribute Raj. Thanks for sharing . I know Ford was trying to get Chris to the LeMans event. It would have been great to see him there. The racing world will miss him..

He was one of the greats, hope he got to see the Ford return to the sport he loved. Chris and Ford, both class acts.
