Changing out the center speaker

Info on Hi-Fi system

Hi Analogdesigner

Thanks for your reply.

I saw your posts with the clear cover. Looks good. What did you do once you took the speaker out? Do you put others under the seats or just elinimate it? If you eliminated, how does the system sound. Did you need to do anything with the wiring?

Just as a vote, I would do the trim color to match the armrest - it would be a natural tie in.

AZGT,

Since I removed the subwoofer/amp, I have no sound what so ever. The AM/FM radio portion of my rig quit working in the first few weeks. I just pulled it out and I am getting an extact replacement unit. The amplifier is needed for the entire system to operate.

When time permits, I may design a miniature, high-efficiency Class-D module that fits under the seat. This gives us the best of all worlds, a visible engine and a good sound system.

Is the McIntosh head unit a standard single-DIN size or something special (smaller)? If, in fact, it is a standard DIN size, why not just use an aftermarket high quality head unit with built-in amplification? Most head units will have 20watts or more. It won't sound the greatest, but it will suffice just fine especially when most everyone here would rather listen to the engine/drivetrain music.

Since it quit working, is that a warranty item? Perhaps they would do the regular radio with the part that is in place of the woofer? Maybe there is a way to come out ahead since it was a $3500.00 upgrade.

An update on the replacement stereo:

I took the car and amp into a car audio shop and they told me that it’s no problem to swap out the head unit and jumper the cables where they terminate at the woofer enabling the use of the existing cable run. We then had a bit of a debate about sat nav displays, as all the best units flip out and up it is not going to be possible to fit one of those (starter button blocks the flip up). They do not stock any of the “single din” sat nav displays as they felt they are just no good. My Z8 has one – it is somewhat less than brilliant – but it has saved me on numerous occasions

I then measured the mcintosh amp for fit behind the drivers seat - it fits! I had previously failed to fit it behind the passenger seat due to the child seat bolts – I’d failed to twig that you don’t need child seat bolts behind the driver seat – duh!

So I now appear to have several options for the radio post the woofer removal.

Question: Can anyone recommend a sat nav solution?

If getting a head unit with a screen, consider getting a backup camera as well. That would be a nice addition to the GT.

I'm not sure that JVC has a nav option for that head unit.... but Eclipse does. The Eclipse is a real quality unit. Their Nav software is identical to that used in the most recent Lexus cars. So, the screen is definitely a compromise but for those of you used to Nav units, the voice guidance prompts are usually very sufficient. Anyway, here is a link to the Eclipse radio. Eclipse CD7000

It will need a small GPS brain, GPS 105 shown about halfway down this page.

I don't want NAV, but the twice-as-big screen on the JVC unit looks like it might actually be big enough for a back-up camera....

What a waste of money! I'll bet you can't even tell which make of Ferrari is back there in that little screen.

:lol

I had thought about this quite a bit a few months ago. So what do you think about a little bit larger rear view mirror with 2 inputs. 1 input from the navigation system and another input from rear view camera. The postion of the mirror is in an area that is easily visable.

On ebay, there is a listing for an audiovox rumpkg2 lcd. There may be other mirrors available.

The part number (from my receipt) is listed as :

5G7Z*6340374*BAA cover - JA2022.541805.84

Price $1,805.84 - Ouch!

I can do that for $1225 if anybody is interested.

That price is very "good", the dealer I bought my car from sold me one for $1240, as "his cost."

Now I am trying to decide if I should get a new head unit with amp that plays MP3 or just mount the Mac amp in back of the seat?

I like to think I give good prices.
I am going to check at work tomorrow to make sure that is the correct part # for that piece. Seems high to me for what it is being described as. I'm just giving a price on that # as it is. Also am going to verify that I can sell for that price.

I sounds like the right part. The part is over priced like most items for the GT. Part of the addmission to the club. I never saw one before I got my part and I thought is was just a pieces of plastic, but I was wrong. It is wrapped in matching black leather and has a rubber gasket on the perimeter.

What would the pricing be for the optional transaxle cooler? It list for around $1279.

And the long tube headers list $2,510.00

Thanks,

I can well relate.
The plastic center console on my NSX that trims the a/c control and radio is $1200 new!! :eek

Alright guys, got a clarification on the panel between the seats now.
The part number that is quoted above is for a vehicle equipped from the factory with the STANDARD audio system. List $1641
The same type of part but with UPGRADED audio system List $2091.
BlackICE,
What part number did you buy? Pay close attention to the part # as the only difference between the two is then last 3 letters.

The part number is 5G7Z 6340374 BAA.

I don't know the list price. A local dealer quoted me ~1640. The dealer I bought the car from sold it to me for 1255.

Yes, I have the part to replace the Mac subwoofer enclosure.
