Vintage California License Plates Application Form

For us California Ford GT owners, here is an opportuinty to put a little vintage on your GT. Deadline is January 2015 to have at least 7500 applications for one of the vintage plate designs. There are options for 1950s, 1960, and 1970s in retro vintage plate designs. Since the 1960s styled black plate with gold lettering has over 6100 applications at present, that is the most likely plate to acieve 7500 applications.

Link below opens up the application form. Ford GTs were a 1960s race car, therefore it makes sense to order the 1960s plate. You can type on the form in each box the requested information, and then print out the application to be mailed in with your check. It is $50 dollars, plus you have the option of a serial numberd plate or a customized license plate in addition. Just fill in your custom entry, fill out form and mail it in. If the program does not achieve 7500 by 2015, your money will be mailed back to you.

No offense but not a fan of this program. There's something about seeing a car with a real vintage plate that makes it special. The fact the it has more than likely remained on the road this entire time puts the car or motorcycle on a pedestal for me.

This program just takes away that credibility, and lets Sacramento line there pockets further.

Posted about this a while ago. Already have my order in. Hasn't been much movement on the orders in the last few months. Hopefully can round up the last 1400 or so of the '60's plate before the deadline!

What you say makes sense…except the contemporary license plates look very lame to me. They have for years. I will go ahead and put an order in for both of my cars. In fact, I was under the impression that these plates WERE available, and didn't realize that there is a petition process going on.

I have ordered a 1960s black style plate for the GT & a blue 1970s for a motorcycle. I have other motorcycles & a car with the appropriate plates. Don't worry, the 7 character new plates won't fool anyone to believe they are original. It'll be better than the lame palm tree one I have now.

Why not buy a previously issued plate (they are available). You can usually find one issued in the month/year that your car was originally registered. If you have both plates, you can have DMV register them against your VIN number.

Ralphie - there is a DMV allowance called YOM (Year of Manufacture) but the car production year has to match the original plate year, i.e. you can't use a 1966 plate on a 2006 car. Unless you are talking about this allowance. If we had an original GT40 it would work. Otherwise getting the new "old" plates are our only choice.

So, for vintage show applications, many owners obtain plates with the correct year and month corresponding to the original sale and registration, and sometimes the state.

Funny thing is, I have the basic white-with-blue-letters California plate on my Midnight Blue GT with stripes and really like the look. The white plate sits inline with the white center stripe, and the dark blue letters are a dead ringer for the midnight blue paint (of course the letters don't have that subtle metallic flake like in the GT's paint, but you can't tell unless you get up close). To me the plate actually looks coordinated to the car's colors and paint scheme, but maybe I'm giving it too much credit. Regardless, I'd rather have this plate than any others offered (old or new).

I have the same standard CA plates on my blu/wht and I think it look right for all of the reasons you have cited! :thumbsup
