Well, they may have been partying, but at least they weren't stealing!

They were stealing productivity and quality from their company.

Chip,
Improper lunchtime behavior is probably better predicated base on job description rather than if one is in a union. Of course most of those jobs may be unionized, others not. I have heard that drug use is high among Wall Street traders and they are not in a union.

I have found employees smoking pot and drinking at my business. I fire them on the spot. The fact that they are no longer working for me is a pretty good predictor that they will not be working stoned at my business again. They'll have plenty of time to smoke pot while collecting their unemployment. When the rest of my employees see one of their members dismissed for drinking on the job, or led away in handcuffs by the police if they are caught stealing, it has a big impact on my remaining workers.

Those Union workers will never be fired. I heartily disagree that a Union's protection is not a factor in an employees decision to engage in such behavior. Studies have shown that when employees see co-workers stealing repeatedly and getting away with it, other employees are more likely to steal. The same holds true when employees are seen consistently drinking on the job and getting away with it.

Almost all criminal behavior and workplace policy violations involve the same type of risk/reward analysis we all perform countless times each day. What is the risk, what is the reward? When the risk of getting busted AND paying a price rises substantially, the reward must be substantially higher for an individual to take that greater risk.

Sorry Chip, they already fired 13 people over this :lol

If a LEO saw them they all could have been arrested for open alcoholic containers, driving while under the influence, drug possession, drinking in public place, etc.

When I employed people my philosophy was as long as the work was getting done correctly and on time and they were not negatively impacting the company I didn't care what they do on their own time. If they didn't do their job, they should be fired, period.

Chip I guess you believe half of wall street and Hollywood should be fired. Look at how long Michael Jackson and Elvis worked even when stoned.

To the best of your knowledge, has the Union issued any internal Bulletins across the Big Three? And how much did Italy have to do with the Firing?

I have to believe that the Fiat and Ferrari factory workers are drinking plently of wine during their lunch breaks. Maybe if they were drinking wine instead of beer they would still have jobs. :)

I am happy (and surprised) to be dead wrong here.

How about the pilot of your corporate jet pounding down a few before he fly's your family in foul weather assuming he's always been able to pull it off in the past? Or a heart surgeon smoking a joint before operating on your wife? Many auto workers operate heavy and potentially dangerous equipment that could get someone hurt or killed. They take the job (as my shop employees do) with the express agreement that they can't have drugs or alcohol in their systems while working. Why should any employer have such reasonable policies if they can be ignored and the only standard is "can they pull it off?" Some jobs lend themselves to drinking and some do not.

You guessed wrong. I hire people for certain jobs and expect them to drink while working for me. Entertainers and musicians who work parties at my home are welcome to drink all they like. Frank Sanatra and Dean Martin made smoking and drinking part of their act. Cheech & Chong did the same with pot. I don't know and don't care what anybody on Wall Street does outside of the guy I'm directly dealing with. If I think he's impaired I can take my business elsewhere, or not. I'm real tolerant of an employee operating a guitar or a microphone who's been drinking, I have no tolerance for someone operating a 5 ton hoist, a drill press, or one of my aircraft after they have had a few cocktails.

Couldn't tell ya. I highly doubt this is any influence of Italy. As mentioned, those guys don't exactly hide their love of a good party, on or off the job.

The fact of the matter is that we live in a society now where you have to be cognizant that you are being watched (with the potential of being recorded) at nearly all times. In that respect, there isn't even a need for any kind of bulletin. They know they are under the microscope at this point, and much more so than any white collar workers that are doing lines with their scotch at lunch and executing mergers in the afternoon. UAW workers boozing it up on the job is a sexy gotcha story for the 11 o clock news, so their dumb asses got what was inevitably coming to them, and they should have known better. Everyone knows someone at an auto plant that spent their days watching porn on a portable DVD between smoke breaks. Not so easy to get away with that now.

It's worth noting that auto plants are dangerous as hell, drunk or sober. The volume of accidents is pretty staggering because it's just nasty work. Hands getting taken off by presses, feet run over by hi-los, fingers severed by whatevers...you can definitely find only 90% of you is left when you retire...
