On Saturday, we had an amazing opportunity! Mark McGowan – yes, the same Mark McGowan that took the Nardo car to 212mph – gave a few of us a personal tour of the Volvo Proving Grounds. Let me first say that we were limited in the number of people who could go, so I apologize to our fellow GT owners that I know would have LOVED to go. Second, you need to know that we all signed a confidentiality agreement and our cameras and cell phones were taken by Security before we drove onto the grounds. So here’s just a snippet of what happened:
We all drove our GTs and met at Carefree Hwy and I-17. Then we drove an hour to the proving grounds. We had 3 white GTs – GT38 & Team Jeff, Blue Moose, AZGT – and two yellow GTs: ChipBeck and TimCantwell – and one red, no stripe (with an amazing amount of beautiful carbon fiber) – JBG. The weather was a lovely 70+ degrees and the sky was spotted with clouds. We could see the rain clouds over the mountains in the distance, but there was no rain in the valley. It was an easy, scenic drive through the Sonoran Desert which is still green from spring rains. Once we arrived at the Volvo Proving Grounds, Security graciously confiscated our cameras and cell phones. Mark came to meet us in a 2010 Mustang (convertible, of course) and escorted us onto the grounds. He took a few pictures of us at the entrance. We walked through the offices where Mark told us a little about the GT program. These proving grounds have GT history we didn’t know about; the demo cars were there in 2003. He talked about the trials, tribulations and successes of those early days trying to get the GT ready for production. We walked out to another building which is Mark’s office (when he’s not behind the wheel of a car). Then all 12 of us piled into a Ford Econoline 15-passenger van where Mark proceeded to take us on the various driving courses. I’d love to tell you we took our GTs out, but we didn’t. We had to settle for imagining it from the comforts of the van. Mark did his best to demonstrate the courses with us in the van – we looked like a van full of bobble-heads! We were there just over 2 hours and Mark was gracious and answered a slew of questions from all of us. We saw Amoeba’s (their term for cars in camouflage), a Booger (the car Mark was testing out there – so named because of its color), the new Raptors, and several other unnamable cars. Let’s just say Ford & Volvo’s upcoming lineup is remarkable. After the tour, we drove up to Wickenburg and had dinner at Anita’s. Mark has so many GT stories; we could have talked all night! Mark is an engineer, an avid car-guy, a pilot, a family man – an all-around great guy! It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon!
here's a couple pictures:

Ford GT Trivia

Gentlemen,

The accident rate of the Ford GT has exceeded the expectations of owners and the Ford Motor Company alike. But do any of you know where the first Ford GT wreck occurred? Have any of you seen the site of the first Ford GT accident? If anyone ever asks, you can tell them that the first Ford GT wreck occurred at the Volvo/Ford Motor Company Desert proving ground near Wickenburg, Arizona on the road course. Mark pointed out the exact spot where it occurred.

There was so much to see and hear about and we all had a fantastic time thanks to the efforts of the Blue Mooses who put this event together. Mark McGowan was a fantastic host and is a most impressive road course driver even while piloting a fully loaded 15 passenger, 1 ton Ford van!

In addition to the Ford GT I am a big Mustang fan as two Shelby Mustangs can be found in my garage. There were more Mustangs at this Desert proving ground than any other type of automobile. Dozens of them, both 2009s and 2010s. I got a chance to crawl into the new 2010 GT500, 2010 Raptor, 2010 SHO Taurus (very cool), and a couple other future Fords that we agreed not to discuss. I didn't know until last Saturday that Mark is an avid pilot who owns two aircraft. I look forward to letting him try his hand at some aerobatics in my Glasair III.

Good show Michelle, thanks for a great day!

Chip

Damn - did I miss something on the tour? You mean there were CARS at the proving grounds? :confused I signed a secrecy agreement and saw NOTHING!! Guess I'll just have to go back.

Thanks again Mark for an unforgettable experience, and thanks Michele and John for making it all happen! :cheers

The best Kodak moment of the day was when we were without cameras - when Chip put on a Swedish crash helmet and turned on the blue rotating beacon on top. Priceless!

Here's a Mustang that was invisible while at at the proving grounds. No one knows how it escaped and wound up parked in front of Anita's.

VPG from Google Earth

This image is from Google Earth. To give you a sense of scale, the straightaway running diagonally is 2.1 miles long. Go to Google Earth and search on "Volvo Proving Grounds", it will take you here and you can zoom in on details.

Each area of the proving grounds is designed to test specific handling characteristics, and therefore the driving surfaces have certain flaws intentionally built in. As Mark put it, "We spent millions of dollars to build bad roads!" To which Tim replied, "Just like the government!" :lol

Nice. their straight with loops at the end is like a massive version of the one at Ford's testing place here.

Are we mentioning any names :lol

Definitely a very special opportunity to see behind the gate and very fortunate to have the chance to attend. Many thanks to the Mooses and Mark for making this happen :thumbsup Now where did I put my soak shack :confused

wow that must a been some experience!!! awsome!

When my grandfather retired he took a job as a security guard at that place.
When I was about 12 he took me and my cousin on a tour of the place. Unfortunately we where too young to really appreciate it. Wish I could go back as an adult. Glad you guys had fun!:thumbsup

You lucky dogs. Who's the guy that looks like Beevis and Butthead in the yellow GT?
