How it's one guy's fault when they were both racing is beyond me. I don't agree with drunk driving but what you don't hear that is they were both impaired. Sad deal either way but some people need to get off their high horse.

I agree but I think it said the Ferrari Driver was clear of ETOH and Drugs.

He wasn't. Had nothing in his system and by all accounts didn't even drink.

If that's the case then I stand corrected and is different from some accounts that I have heard. I admired the guy for what he had accomplished and his true love for MMA. I still question how the other guy is being held accountable by many for his death when they were out at 1am engaged in a street race? Very unfortunate for all involved.

That's why I don't street race anymore. You may not crash, but the guy next to you might and you're just as culpable.

Sad story ...

do you think the out come of the trial would be the same if there was no contact between the two cars prior to the ferrari crashing?

Dunno, but I can tell you this: if you're in a street race in Michigan, and one guy crashes and kills some third party, they are most definitely coming after both parties engaged in the street race for penalties punishable by jail time. You can guarantee that whatever laws you can be proven to have violated, they will pursue the maximum penalties to make an example out of you. Especially if you're a rich guy with fast car.

I guess what I meant to ask is that do you think the manslaughter charge would have stuck?

Ya I know there is no sympathy for anyone street racing, too many peope have been killed or injured lately but manslaughter is on a different level!

Internationally speaking street racing is a way of life.

Take a quick look at the Google results for "Street Racing Manslaughter". It's littered with cases where the guy in the other car that didn't kill anyone gets the same charges as the one that did, including manslaughter. It's like being the guy in the getaway car when someone gets capped during a bank robbery. You may not have pulled the trigger, but you're getting charged in the shooting anyways. Scary stuff.

It was a lot different in the pre-Fast and Furious age. The first Woodward Dream Cruise had people standing in the middle of the street flagging races on a main thoroughfare, and that was barely over 10 years ago.

We used to always drive like madmen between Detroit and Toronto. The Canadian guy that got me into fast cars sold his 99 or 00 C5 that had a 436 ci stroker in it to some guy in Toronto. The new owner subsequently crashed it in a three way street race on the 427 about 5 years ago, smashing it so bad it threw the engine over the barrier into oncoming traffic. The driver died like a week later. Now? If they catch you street racing, going 30 over, or anything remotely related to street racing, they are taking your car on the spot.

scary stuff, and very sad what happened in this case for all!!!!

I remember back in the day in San Antonio when the cops used to show up and watch us street race from a far so as to not get noticed!! but we knew they were there! of coarse I guess with everything street racing is much more dangerous now than it was before, the cars are just much faster today!

I don't know but a couple of things are working for me here. The first is the passenger who in my case would be my wife and I can tell you I would not!!, put in harms way. The second would be the conditions. I have seen numerous, as I would assume all of you have, people who want to race. I can only say that I am guilty of immature immediate reactions to this. I now take a different view to this. Leave your family considering the life well lived than the one ended to soon.

as John mentioned, we've all been subject to a race when in our GT's. Personally, I've managed to resist the challenges.

More than once , at the next light, the window comes down and they ask why not race me?

Standard answer is my car will go over 200 mph and that is just not safe to do on the street.

Besides I already know who's car is faster than yours--mine.

As in the Newport Ferrari/Porsche "event", one can lose so much or gain so little racing on the street.
