Ed -

If you want to make it a 2-day trip, here would be my suggestion -

From Sacramento down CA 49 (the Gold Rush Highway) to Sonora, and over Sonora Pass on CA-108 to US-395, turn south and spend a night in Lee Vining, Mammoth Lakes, or Bishop. Then, south to Big Pine, CA, and over Westgard Pass & Gilbert Pass on CA-168, and over Lida Pass on NV-266 to US-95 and then south through Beatty to Las Vegas. Lots of good scenery and twisty roads. Check it out on the Google link below, and zoom in to catch all the curves.

Assumes no snowfall in the Sierras prior to travel date, which would block the passes.

Or, take it on your way home....

Trust Ralphie for incredible road knowledge of the Eastern Sierra to Vegas. He's my ski pal also!

If we do the straight drive on I-5 to the Rally, like most want to do, then I will plan a cool pre-Rally drive on Monday starting & ending in Vegas. Tell me your thoughts.

So, drive down to Vegas from NorCal/CenCal on Monday, THEN do a local pre-Rally drive starting and ending at the hotel?

Yikes. I'm all for lots of driving, but it's already almost 400 miles to LV for me, and almost 600 for you. And you want to tack on ANOTHER drive that same day? How about Tuesday morning before the cabana festivities?

Here's your run from Napa to Hwy 49 through Murphys, over Ebbetts Pass, Hwy 4, then on to Bishop 1st day. Bishop to Vegas 2nd day. You can pick up Ralphie in Mammoth Lakes, and stay over in Bishop Ca, Hwy 395. Would be an excellent run in a GT. Open road and no traffic. Taking the 5 south to the 58 is miserable with traffic and cows in Tulare.

599 miles, 11 hrs :)

Only problem is early October Snows in the Sierras. I-5 would be no chance of snow for sure, but no mountain and valley vistas either.

I've done that drive over Ebbett's. Nice. Possible bad weather that time of year. July & August are the best.

Ok, that makes more sense. In which case, I'm probably out since I'll most likely be getting in on Monday.

I am planning on a short pre-Rally drive also on Tuesday morning. Come back for the afternoon in a poolside cabana with a Maker's Mark Manhattan.
