There are plans to drive from NorCal to Vegas on Sunday Oct 13. For the last Vegas Rally some of us went I-80 to 95 (Reno) while others of us took I-5 to 15 (Mojave). The safer route is I-5 but boring. It hailed & rained on the 80/95 group. High elevation desert can have tricky weather in the fall. We would drive back on Sunday Oct 19 which makes for 7 nights aka a week of fun! Both routes are almost the exact same mileage from Sacramento: 569 mi. With stops it is 9-10 hours. If we mountain (Sierras) or coast drive it would add 4-5 hrs or it might be a two day trip on the way down. Let me hear from you!

Vegas via Reno is a haul! Maybe not scenic, but the 5 to 15 would allow the Nor/CenCal members to hook up with the SoCal guys and get to Vegas en mass. Speaking only for myself, but I assume the other guys in my area, provided they're going this year (Marv Rose, Jerry de Young, Richard Shehadey, others??) will head south and west and not up toward Reno.

I'm just tossing out options. I wasn't one of the 80/95 route guys last time. We may bring a trailer with spare wheels/tires & tools to follow us.

No Heidi is flying in, someone else will be pulling the trailer.

Susan and I will be driving out on Sunday as well. But we're coming from So Cal. Only about a 4 hour drive if you're in no hurry. Sooooo we'll be there in 3.

Ed -

If you want to make it a 2-day trip, here would be my suggestion -

From Sacramento down CA 49 (the Gold Rush Highway) to Sonora, and over Sonora Pass on CA-108 to US-395, turn south and spend a night in Lee Vining, Mammoth Lakes, or Bishop. Then, south to Big Pine, CA, and over Westgard Pass & Gilbert Pass on CA-168, and over Lida Pass on NV-266 to US-95 and then south through Beatty to Las Vegas. Lots of good scenery and twisty roads. Check it out on the Google link below, and zoom in to catch all the curves.

Assumes no snowfall in the Sierras prior to travel date, which would block the passes.

Or, take it on your way home....

On a scale of 10, US395 is a 10. I-5 is a 1.

I gave I-5 a point, because it does get you where you're going. If ever there was a case for driverless cars...

Gary, you know since you're a former resident, buy any road that traverses the central valley of California is sh*t for the sole reason that there's nothing here but cow pastures and dirt fields. But as you said, it gets you where you need to go (i.e. SoCal).

As dry as California has been, Tioga Pass may still be open. :)

Weather in October in the mountains is a gamble. The valley has a higher chance of good weather. We drive the speed limit on the freeway but I-5 can be fun if you did it at 200mph+.

I know - it's one of the reasons why I might miss the Rally.

I missed Rally VII in New Orleans for just that reason - 1st day of the Rally, it snowed in Mammoth.

Move your GT down to lower elevation before the Rally! I'm sure someone here can help you store it before the Rally. Or better yet move lower! You are too close to the sun there!

The Rally reception is Tuesday around 7pm. If you are driving the 10 hours from your home Triheart, & spend an hour to check in & freshen up, you will need to leave by 8am. Hopefully no accidents, flat tires, etc to delay you. Leave with us on Sunday! Keep stress to a minimum & fun to the maximum!

Good idea. Would be a shame if Ralphie missed this because of snow.

Sounds like you're volunteering your garage, Ed!

Thanks for working on the pre- and post-Rally plans. Last year's events were fantastic.
