Very sad day, saw him last at an event at THE PETERSEN, missed seeing him this year at the various car events in Monterey.

Fondly recall him bashing around an Alfa at the Monte Carlo Classique three years ago.

May he rest in peace, a true gentleman.

Look at the pic. from the 59 grand prix. A dino ,no roll cage, partial leather helmet,SPOKE WIRE/BIAS PLY TIRES, Gas tank an inch from your neck AND HE GOT BUMPED IN THE ASS. :eek REAL MEN.....REAL DRIVERS. GTJOEY 1314

I last visited Phil last August 3rd, 2007, the afternoon of the Rally, as I had an hour or so to wait before the evening at the Peterson Museum. Even though in ill health, we spent the time remembering some fun times in '62, his reigning championship year - as it was a changeover year for Ferrari with a lot of the management going to ATS and a new Italian team manager fouling up the system. When I left to go to the Peterson, he came out to look at the FGT - although requiring assistance to walk. His comment - "It's better than the originals." A wonderful man, and a great friend - I'll miss him, and treasure the memories we had together.

Phil at 1964 Le Mans w/ Ford GT40

Phil at Nurburgring in 1964 with the original Ford GT40, chassis P/0102; at Le Mans (1964) he DNF'd, but set fastest lap at 211.429 km/h = 131.375 mile/h, partnered with Bruce McLaren.

At Le Mans the GT40 led for two hours, set a new lap record and clocked 207mph down the Mulsanne until transmission woes accounted for two of the three cars, the other catching fire.

Here's a video of some of the 1965 Los Angeles Times Grand Prix for Sports Cars at Riverside where Phil did some color commenting for ABC.

Initially, I wasn't going to post this, but in review, at 1:26/1:27 into the clip, you can see the Ford GTX1 (#71)coming through Turn 7A. Thought it might be of interest to the new GTX1 owners.

For those who could not attend the funeral of Phil Hill, I have attached a copy of the tribute booklet for today's services.

As I had known Phil for almost 40 years, I was privileged yesterday to share remembrances with Alma Hill of the special times we all had together.

Alma told me the photo on the back cover is very personal to her (and was actually acquired by her after Phil left us), because he passed away only a few yards from that finish line. - Rick Cole'
