Question for wine collectors

I recently finished a 500 bottle wine cellar and wondering what you serious guys use to manage your collection? Much of the stuff is drinkable and will come in/out. But some will sit for 5-10+ years. All reds.

Is there a system, app, or combination that you use? Not even sure where to begin.

BTW, I only have about 200 bottles now, but its growing rapidly.

We learned that we can easily accumulate more than we can drink (and that is a LOT) before the "best drink by" date. We simply stack it by age.

The fact is, wine making and wines have improved so much over the past 20-30 years, that to me, it seems silly to buy very expensive wines to lay down for years. By that I mean, stock up on wines from good years and skip the bad years.

Unless you are into wines as investments...like cars as investments vs, drivers...it's not hard to manage a drinker's collection. OTOH, it's very easy to buy more than you can handle. So...keep buying and invite us over for tastings.
 
I simply use a spread sheet and review what I might like to open for a given meal.
Quite unsophisticated but has worked for me.
Although you do have to make sure you do not overlook some vintages and they go over their peak drinking timeframe.
 
These wines are certainly not investments. Nothing over a few hundred dollars. However a nice Cab or Bordeaux may need 5,10, or 15 years to taste its best.

I did find a app called VinoCellar that looks cool. I more need it for logistics as my racks are 2 or 3 deep.
 
It may need 5, 10, 15 years. Or, maybe not. A lot of these wine predictions are based on hopes. And need tasting and perhaps re-corking along the way. (Hint hint).

I never heard of a 3D wine management system (LxWxD).

Perhaps your friend from Bloomington could come over and sip some wine. Perhaps he would also have you over?

Wine is like cars to me. I drink the wine and drive the car.

I do have a bottle of Taylor Fladgate 20 year tawny port that is in the van on the way here - I bought it to have a night with a friend and then he had the audacity to die. RIP Mark. Also in the pack is a bottle of Crown Royal given to me one Christmas by another guy that passed away - RIP Doug. I can't open them yet.

I think the most practical solution is using a Mission Impossible style flying "wine angels," be sure to check out the Wine Tower during the Vegas Rally, at the Aureole restaurant in Mandalay Bay.

A friend of mine in Switzerland uses a system called MémoireduVin. I've seen it and it is quite impressive, and also a beautiful piece of furniture.
