Please Let the Atlas be the new superduty

I bought an F-350 every other year from 1990 to 2007. The headlights being upside-down and over sized keeps me away now. This could change my mind yesterday. No humongous turn indicator on top of the headlight now.:thumbsup

That is the concept for the new F-150 but that's not to say the next refresh of the Superduty will not follow the same styling direction. I like where its going but was disappointed in the lack of new powertrain direction.

I hope the engineers can get that roof and tailgate rack past the lawyers. That setup is a great solution to a real problem. Ever try to haul a 16' piece of lumber without a ladder rack?

I saw the article stated it was the 1/2 ton. But it looks so big, I was hoping it would be the Superduty which has been in it's current body since 1999 which is way too long. They were on a 5 year cycle forever, now it is close to 15. :frown

I like it.

It's the new F-150. Extremely thinly veiled.

I hope they throw us Superduty buyers a bone and give us a killer look like this truck.

Ford, please, do not keep your headlights under the turn indicators, It's ugly. Give us something like the Atlas, or god forbid, the headlights off the Dodge.

definitely has some new features and styling. http://youtu.be/9Rsa_9lkbbY

As good as the truck may be, marketing should be shot. Selected nameplate is too close for comfort..

F-150 Concept

article from Jalopnik

Why The 2015 Ford F-150 Concept Is More Important Than The Corvette
Patrick George
Forget the new Corvette Stingray. Forget the holograms or Tesla's sweet gull-winged Model X. Forget the Chinese cars in the lobby, the BMW 4-Series concept, or any of the fancy electric or hybrid cars on display throughout the Cobo Center.

The Ford Atlas concept was far and away the most important vehicle at the Detroit Auto Show. Here's why.
It may not get as much media attention as an exciting, well-built (finally) performance car like the Corvette, but because the Atlas is more than likely the next F-150, it is a really big deal. And it is hugely important to the global auto industry and millions of people everywhere.
In the U.S. last year alone, Ford sold some 645,000 new F-Series trucks, making it the best-selling vehicle of any kind in America, a record they've held for more than 30 years. USA Today notes that the F-Series trucks "account for most of Ford's worldwide profits."

You probably won't find too many automotive publications (us included) hyping up a pickup truck, or slowly leaking out images of it over several years. The Corvette is a hell of a lot sexier than any truck. It's important to General Motors and Chevrolet because it's a showcase of their best technology, a rolling example of their very best efforts. And it may even have that "halo effect" where it draws people into showrooms, some of whom may leave in a Malibu or even a Camaro (although I often wonder whether that's really effective or not anymore with so much information about cars available on the Internet, but that's another story.)

But the Corvette doesn't pay the General's bills. In the last few years, they've sold about 12,000 per year, and while we can expect that to rise somewhat when the C7 goes on sale, it won't keep GM executives' children warm at night. For Ford, the F-Series trucks do exactly that.

This is a vehicle people don't just drive — they're essential to getting work done in scores of industries. People's lives and paycheck literally depend on the durability of the F-Series trucks.

But then you have markets where people DO just drive them. In my native Texas, people own trucks regardless of whether they really need a truck and a fully loaded King Ranch Ford truck is considered as much a luxury car as any Mercedes-Benz.

And if the features previewed on the Atlas carry over to the production F-150, then it will be as revolutionary as the Corvette. It will be more aerodynamic, carry an evolved EcoBoost engine, and will weigh as much as 700 pounds less than the current truck. Check out Jason's story to learn about a ton of other clever features that may end up on the next F-150.

By my logic, the next most important car at the show is the Toyota Furia, because that previews the next Corolla, another massive volume seller. But I say the Atlas is more important because it's a more evolved concept and less of a design study, and because it's a vehicle for working, not just driving.

What do you think? Was the Atlas the top concept at the Detroit show, or was there something even bigger there?

Writer is 'dead-on' with the relevance of both the Ford and Toyota concepts.

The Ford media event ealier this week was interesting as much from a people, as well a product perspective. Many industry types/media yawned as Ford showed Transit and Transit Connect derivatives in addition to the aformentioned Atlas. Yawn if you will, but that segment (commerical truck) carries some of the greatest profit potential. Looks like Ford has done a nice job from a product perspective, will be interesting as to how it communicates/demonstrates the the value proposition.

I'd say the biggest takeaway people should have is the juxtaposition of the Atlas (ie new F-150) and the new Silverado/Sierra. These things make money. They make a lot of money. Ford has delivered an extremely good looking truck that is packed with desirable content that will be important for years to come, and I can't say the same for the GM twins. It's not a particularly risky bet, but unless GM is committed to relentlessly buying the market share, I think they are about to be delivered a fairly brutal ass beating come MY2015 and forward.

I've been in the truck market for awhile now and it has come down to the redesign's exterior of the F 150 and Tundra, quality of interior and fuel economy. The Jalopnik write up says the F 150 has improved areo but to me it still looks like a brick, not to say that I don't like it:thumbsup. I don't understand why all four MFG's make their front ends squared off like a full sized long haul "big rigs". I would think a more stream line front would help a bunch with fuel econ.

Because good design and style sells. Toyota has the most boring line of vehicles on the planet.

They are appliances.

This is why they have kicked ASS for 35 years. In my opinion, they have made the best since 1967.

The only legitimate complaint is they (Fords) aren't dirt cheap to hot rod like the GMs due to their overwhelming aftermarket support.

Yeah, they suck. Should close down and file for bankruptcy.:bored

A boring normal car attracts boring normal people that are afraid of any thing else. The Toyota trucks look deacent but there no match for my overwhelmingly superior Raptor!

Found a car for you CJ. Nothing normal here. :lol
