I was talking to a bud the other day about the oil change process on the GT. He suggested an oil extractor product much like below -

Well, you could suck out the reservoir with this, but you would leave the oil in the pan. (There's no dipstick tube down to the cast pan!)

In my experience you get ~1/4 - 1/2 quart of oil from the pan drain plugs (2).

Thanks Kendall. That's what I was expecting.

Getting under those pans isn't the best time you can have, but the chance for a close inspection of the engine and tranny is time well spent.

It's tough to compete with gravity. All of these type of gadgets end up leaving non-trivial amount of oil in nooks, crannies, pans, etc. And, it's not unlikely that those are the spots that accumulated dirt/filings/sludge (again, that gravity thing) reside.
Just say no.

What do you guys think about this drain?

My drive on lift does not provide much room for accessing the sump tank & makes for a difficult and somewhat messy process. Any drawbacks to a set up like this?

None, other than if it fails. I don't know the reliability of such a device.

I would be comfortable with the FAA approved devices and their prices probably reflect the higher quality. However I don't think these have the right size threads.

'Don't know if this is the EXACT same device, but, I bought a VERY similiar setup some years back. The inside diameter of that (this?) 'valve was/is soooooo small your KIDS will be having kids before the pan drains. (The "stream" that comes outta the pan thru this thing is 1/2 of what one normally sees when an OEM plug is removed.)

I almost immediately had 2nd thoughts about the reliability of the puppy compared to the OEM plug the instant I examined it "close up". I decided I DIDN'T trust it, removed it, and threw it away.

'Just my $.03.

Clearance is an issue on the 4 posts so I cut the bottom off of a 1 gal container and cut a hole in the side right at the bottom. This gets the oil from the reservoir to the drip tray which then takes it to the bucket - no problem.

I have used this valve on my S2000 in the past as the members of the forum for that car endorsed it. I didn't have the car long, but the valve seemed well made and really didn't look like a leak hazard. It looks like it is endorsed my some major manufacturers as well.

I'm going to order a few of these for the more basic cars in the home and kids fleet. I'll keep you posted.

I have used the fumotousa valve on the oil tank drain of my early 911 (plenty of ground clearance) for many years. It is convenient and reliable. Of course, the mounting threads have to be compatible on whatever car it is to used.

looks easy to use. too bad there isn't something like that for the oil filter. hey, just thought of something. does anybody punch a hole in the bottom of the oil filter before removing it, to help reduce the mess when unscrewing it?
