I just replace mine with Fram filters. The fit was as good as OEM. The gasket material is orange like the original air filters. Amazon has these for an super price of $5.40 each.

Thanks, Ice. Great idea!

Anyone try the K&N filters yet. Do they out flow the stock or Fram filters? There reusable but 10 times the cost of the Frams...

Thanks

Are these made by IBM as well?

At Amazon, following your link, when you enter Ford "GT" model, the part locator comes up with: Fram CA8958 Cone-Shaped (Conical) Air Filter. Although the picture looks correct (Rectangular), the description on the part notes a concial fliter (which happens to fit the MUSTANG GT). Did you receive the correct part - or - is the descriptor field just incorrect?

I noted the same thing.
But ordered hoping the actual Fram part number CA8958 which is correct, would be shipped.

I replaced my filters with Fram CA8958 and road tested the car. I bought those from a local auto store. Since the fit and function appears as OEM I order 6 more from Amazon that I have not received yet. If they are CA8958 there shouldn't be an problems. I believe the description is wrong. I will post an update when they arrive, which should be this afternoon.

6 more will be almost a lifetime supply. For EP the original filters would be a lifetime supply.

Fram ca-8958 air filter

The FRAM CA-8958 Air Filter is for the 99-03 Ford Lightning 5.4L (SC) engine!!! It's LENGTH is about 0.095" shorter than the one for the GT. Motorcraft lists its Air Filter FA-1682 as replacement for Ford Filters: XL3V9601AC (GT) and XL3Z9601AA (Ligtning). This is why it may fit the GT.:thumbsup

Andy which dimension is 0.095" shorter? The length, width, or gasket thickness?

Would you have any insights on why a new "sized" filter of almost the identical dimenstions were made for the Ford GT program and later Ford decided that both cars could use the earlier design Lighting filter? If in fact the off the shelf Lighting filter could have been used from the start, seems like a wasted time and money.

Or media depth... (parallel to the airflow direction thru the filter)
I agree with the question. Why would the airbox design utilize a different size filter if the Lighting filter size was so close? If anyone knows....

I am curious about this too. After reading of the OEM unit coming apart and entering the intake I have been wondering what else is out there.

.

My gut tells me a clean K&N filter may outflow a clean OEM type paper filter, but with worst filtering. Maybe I am giving up some HP for cleaner air and a longer engine life. A lot of extreme race cars run without any filter at all, but they rebuild the engines so often dirt is not a concern. Always tradeoffs, seldom a free lunch.

RockAuto lists the same strange "conical" description. $6.75 ea.

There is also a NAPA Part # 2572 and i believe WIX makes it for them.

I would rely on Torrie for exact part replacement (and support a sponsor).

Also Shadowman would be a good resource.

If I remember a long time ago many tried K&N and found nothing gained on the dyno, I could be wrong and a search came up with too much reading for this poor working buy to read today.

...and I seem to remember there was also some speculating about whether the oil in the K&N filters messed up the GT's intake 'sensors.

I agree totally about supporting the sponsers however in this case there seams to be a problem with the OEM filters. Now haveing said that it could just be an isolated few filters but please search the fourm for " preventative maintance saved me" I don't know how to add it to this thread feel free to do so, i just want you to know why some people want to switch to an alternative filter other then Stock OEM Ford. My strong recomendation to anyone that still has the OEM filters in their Gal is to take the time to look at them without any further delay!!!!
