Newport Beach, site of Rally 2, the lifeguards got it pretty good.

High pay and benefits for lifeguards in Newport Beach is the latest example of frustrating levels of compensation for public employees. More than half the city’s full-time lifeguards are paid a salary of over $100,000 and all but one of them collect more than $100,000 in total compensation including benefits.

When thinking about career options with high salaries, lifeguarding is probably not one of the first jobs to come to mind. But it apparently should. In one of Orange County’s most desirable beach destinations, Newport Beach, lifeguards are compensated all too well; especially compared with the county annual median household income of $71,735.

It might be time for a career change.

Like me, I think you are bitter we were geeks (probably still is) that had to work, pay EDD, match Social Security wages, Workman's Compensation.

A friends son is one of those Lifeguards. He siad it's 'all about the calendar!' (meaning the chicks dig the guys on the calendar). He didn't mention anything about the pay. Go figure.

Up here in Idaho we just give them an inner-tube from one of our many locally owned and operated junk yards and figure if beach goers can't figure out how to use it then it's just natures way of thinning out the herd.
Did I tell you guys in Ca. my GT registration went up this year and I'm now on the hook for $56.00 including a personalized plate. The Bastards!

$56.00? I want that deal.

Dealer Plates...

I'm probably going to get punched in the face by you guys for this. But since being a stuntman for 16 years and having a previous 5 years of professional live shows and before that, 6 years of amateur competition. I can only make assumptions as to the requirements, the responsibilities and the need to act fast when the moment presents itself in an emergency situation for these guys.
I know that most of what they do must seem so glamorous but the behind the scenes most likely isn't. I would bet that there is a lot of geekiness with in there community as well... We have a lot of graduates that end up being in the stunt community, from engineers to lawyers to Teacher degrees etc....
I would say $100K + a year for having to stay in shape (as a profession, sucks at times) keeping up to date on the basic medical practices besides just CPR and dealing with the public in NEW PORT BEACH..... Is probably justifiable :)
I know, rail into me now guys...
I would say as most of you know with basic economics and or Realty terminology, LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION, It's the same with Police Departments and Fire Departments... Certain cities pay better, wayyyyy better :)
....and that's just my .02

I'm now going to go for a swim ;)

Dave Hasselholf got even more to pretend to be one. :lol

Look like a tough/touch job that more guys wouldn't want to do without hazzard pay.

I will say that some lifeguards have to do a lot more than just sit around checkin out the surf.

I go to school close to the ocean (a block, maybe two away) and its not that rare to hear a lifeguard siren. They are like firemen in some respects.
