My “project” doing a re-engine on my L39 is almost complete! Its been 17 months. Other than the physical engine mounts, the inlet ducting, exhaust/bypass ducting, pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical, removal of APU, linkages, instrumentation, computers, weight/balance, FAA....... its really been pretty straight forward... First flights were last week – and the results look very promising!
We took the Russian engine out (Ivchenko AI25-TL) and replaced it with an American engine (Garrett TFE-731). Net result is the plane is lighter, more thrust, (much) better throttle response (6 seconds vs. 12 second spool up) – and better fuel consumption. Access to parts / expertise for the engine also is greatly improved.
Finishing flight testing, and then “Natasha” can come home to Minnesota!!
