lower dashboard removal

For anyone thinking about removing their gauges for repair, besides the wealth of information already available, I found removing the bottom half of the dashboard a little bit of help. The operation involves unsnapping the upholstered outer covering and then unscrewing the metal backing. The whole operation takes 10 minutes only because it's the first time. I have a bad back and every little bit helps.
 
I agree that it will aid a little bit - allows you to get your fingers in there and push outward on the back of the speedometer. However, it is not a "must" step and for those taking it off, be VERY careful not to let it bend in the middle. (It wants to!)
 
I have taken out the gauges and lower dash for Kip's nice 2DIN. IMO I wouldn't remove the lower dash to do the gauges, too much risk up damaging the covering. For those that are interested in PPI trivia, the metal plates the covering attaches to tells a lot about how and where the car was stored. They are bare steel and in climates near the beach, or where high is humidity e.g. FL those plates will have substantial rust on them. I live in a pretty good area so mine were only slightly rusted, less than 5%. I cleaned them up and painted them silver. Now they will look great forever. Not than anyone will ever see them.

I live in Florida and have no rust on either car.

You must have a climate controlled garage? Have you check both sides?
