Looking for a Ford GT

Hi everybody

I think I convinced myself that I need a Ford GT.
I have been lusting after one since the first spy photos were out and now I think I can't wait any longer.

I am thorned because we (wife and 2 girls of 2 and 4) are moving this Summer to the UK (London) and I have already 2 silly (read impractical cars) that we need to take with us.
And in London there are not many houses with a 3-car garage... Oh well...

I wanted to ask you guys about the current market. Where do you find the right car?
I am not sure what color I like best... I go from yellow to red to midnight blue to heritage...
Also I am not particularry bothered about the fact that the car must be new... s I said my car will be a daily driver and if I find the car 1,000 miles from where I live (we are in Charlotte NC) I will hop on a plane and drive it back.
So what is the best way to find the right car? Is there a big difference between the 2005 and 2006 models. I know Tungsten and Heritage are 2006 colors.. Are there any 2005 only colors?

The only option that I really like is the lightweight wheels... I am indifferent to the stripes, color of the calipers, stereo upgrade etc).

This afternoon we (wife and myself) are going to check a car that is nearby. It has 2k miles, red, no stripes, no wheels etc

http://www.morrisonmotorco.com/display/?vehicle=2129&images=4&theme=morrison

Note that the infos are wrong... miles are 2,700 and price is $155,900)

It looks to me as the price is a little on the high side... Anyway I am not bringing my checkbook with me...

What do you think? Anything I should look for?

Thanks again for your help and any suggestion that you might have

I hope I will join the club soon

Ciao for now

Matteo

Welcome! The classiest color, quicksilver metallic, was a 2005 only color. I may be biased.:banana

Can you import a US spec. GT into the UK?

That is the other big question.

I saw that there is someone on the board here that was looking to do just that.. I think he lives in Florida and London.

I am going to call Ford of Great Britain also to figure out whether they would honor the factory warranty on a US car.

Considering that only 28 cars were officially allocated to Britain it looks like there would be some un-official imports going around.

I've just imported one of the twenty-eight UK cars to the U.S. To get the car set-up for U.K. spec. you should contact Roush in London. They modified the original twenty-eight cars and have done a lot of "grey market" cars since then. They are very good. If you want a contact name and number at Roush send me a PM.

Rob's already given you some key information on Roush....

How long are you going to be in the UK for? If you were coming over here for 3 years or so, would it make sense to buy a car that's already in the UK I wonder? I guess cost might be a factor given the Sterling Vs Dollar rate and if you were going to take the car back to the US after your assignment here.

In terms of bringing a US car over to the UK (which is what I did) takes a few weeks. Then it needs something called an SVA (Single Vehicle Approval). To get your car through an SVA costs around £5,000 - Roush have done ALL the European cars and are the only firm you should use. Roush also service the GT's - they're a very good bunch of people.

If there are arrangements to be made in the UK and you need any help, give me a yell - I'm always happy to help one of the gang, as everyone here is.

Neil

PS: The warranty thing doesn't really work too well - Ford would put you onto Roush by the way - warranties (from my understanding) are, essentially, a dealer related 'policy' and, as such, difficult to transfer.

Rob, Neil and all the others thanks for the inputs.
We are moving to the UK/Europe for good. I am Italian and my wife is British and our stay in the US was always going to be temporary.

When we move we'll bring at least another 2-3 vehicles with us. As per buying a UK Ford GT right now there is a big difference in price (the cable might be the culprit but I suspect that there are also supply/demand aspects) and I want a car now.

'Pockets thanks for the heads up on the "for sale" forum.
I think I'll end up buying a used one so that there is no need to nanny it for the break in.

One last observation... If I buy this car it will be the most impractical purchase of my life as it will have to be my daily driver but I after watching the last 10 minutes of the Jeremy Clarkson "the good, the bad and the ugly" movie I cannot stop thinking about it...

Don't worry, you won't regret it.

Yellow is just about sold out in new but you can find some used ones if you check e-bay and autotrader.com. It's one of the rarest.

Red is the most common color so you can find plenty of those.

Good luck!

If you are bringing the vehicle from the USA to the UK you should purchase this vehicle ASAP and title the car and insure the car in the USA six months prior to coming to the UK. By doing this, when you bring it in after six months it is classed as a personal import, therefore avoiding 10% import duty and 17.5% VAT which would work out to a lot of money on this vehicle.

You are allowed to drive the vehicle for six months in the UK on USA registration plates. After this time the vehicle would have to be UK registered involving an SVA test. The only real problem with this is to make sure you keep the standard exhaust. There are several people that can do this test for $2000. As for Roush UK, they are the Company who fitted Jeremy Clarkson's car with the alarm and other electrical items which has caused him all the problems that he has had with his GT.

Much as I would hate to disagree with a spectator........

Use Roush. I didn't use them first time around to SVA my GT -and now it has to be put right by Roush. I know Clarkson, he had some bad luck and also tried to jump start his GT from the trickle charger. Not sensible and not the fault of Roush.

Roush have prepared over 100 GT's for Europe, I know the guys personally AND they're Fords' technology partner for the Ford GT.

Alternatively go and get it done for $2k!

Capri thank you for the tip. We are moving to London at the end of the Summer. This is enough time to import the car as used avoiding the taxes.
I also plan to keep my US plates as long as possible.

As per Roush... I think it would be silly to skimp on service to save two thousand quid. This is not a Fiesta.

My struggle right now is that it will be dfficult to find a 3-car garage house in Wimbledon/Richmond and currently I have a 1974 911 RSR, a modded 993 and my wife's Cayenne. So if I went for the GT the 993 would be the one to go... but the Porsche is a car that I can actually use to go grocery shopping and take the kid's around in.
MMmm maybe I should just park the 993 on the street... ;)

I know someone in Florida that may want to trade for your RSR...

Get your car ASAP and drive the crap out of it while its here so you iron out the bugs and make sure you get the half shaft bolt upgrade done before you ship the car.

What RSR do you have?

What is the chassis # of the RSR you have? I've had a few RSRs. One of my favorite cars of all time.

I have a friend who will be joining us here soon that has been looking for a yellow car for a few weeks. He kept finding cars with 50 miles, 500 miles, never been titled, yada yada but couldn't find the right one. I had the dealership here do a search for him like they did for me and he found 9 total in the US (bumblebee). The best deal he could get for a car with 6.6 miles on it was kinda high, but he decided he wanted a new car versus one that might have been beat on already. A lot can happen in 500 miles.

Another friend of mine just went through a severe nightmare trying to buy an untilted car with 50 miles. Turned out the car had been wrecked and the dealer had replaced the dash module without showing all the old miles, big time fraud. He had gotten an anonymous letter for an employee at the dealer blowing the whistle. Alls well though, as he got the dealer to get him a new car for the same price.

It is a federal crime to install a new odometer without setting the correct mileage. Call the FBI!
