Interior and Exterior protection (Expel Group buy)

A few months ago at Sema several of us started talking about an interior protection kit made out of paint protection film. Well we now have that available from a local source out of the top of the line expel film.

The "A" kit covers the center console and sills of the driver and passenger sides.

The "B" kit covers those and the center of both seat backs.

If there is an interest I can work this out to be a group buy and work with Chris on a price for that.

Also if anyone is wanting extended protection kits for the outside of the GT please send me a PM as that is in the works also using 1161 as a pattern model.

thanks
S

**** Update ****

I spoke with Chris today about the group buy and convinced him to extend that to cover exterior film also. The caveat is that to be in the group buy you have to be a paying member of the forum (membership has its merits).

Top of the line expel film usually retails for 1750.00 for the full kit (covering everything exterior) and Chris said that he would retail price the interior kit at 200.00. But for the group buy and because you guys would need a local installer he agreed to sell the kits film only for 1250.00 for the exterior kit and 120.00 for the interior "a" kit. The "B" kit would be 50.00 more. He also stated that he has all the vintage graphic files for the JWA cars and would do a group buy on roundels/logos again.

If your interested in either post or pm me and I will list you here. Lets set the cut-off for this group buy to be on the list by the 10th of April.

Let me know in the $ for the "A" package? I haven't done the red car yet!! Are you doing a full 6" wide piece on the sills?

Yes the sill is either 6 or a bit over. I have not asked Chris how wide it is but told him that I wanted total coverage.

He's working out initial cost on the kit. A group buy drops the price considerably as it covers the costs of the pattern work. I ran him through the mill on doing that pattern and he has quite a few hours into that one. So I would like to get a number of people that want the kit then just ask him to base the cost on materials and hours rather than a bid cost.

But I placed you on the list.

add me to the list please !!

Add me to the list as well
Thanks for working on a group buy!

Keep me in the loop!

A Kit

I would be interested in a "A" kit as long as the film can be removed at some point in time.

It can be removed without leaving any residue. But it is not reusable after it comes off.

Add me to the "A" list please

Let me begin that it is not my intention of diminishing the value of this process but rather to simply inform.

Now I understand that the interior pieces as mentioned can present the brunt of the day to day wear and tear as such the plastic film makes sense however;

Once the film is applied the finish of the panels will become more glossy when compared to satin; IMO this is NBD as either way they will look great however my experience with the silver painted trim pieces is that the pre-paint prep work was marginal at best as such even blue painters tape can pull the paint off even if one is very careful as such I would say that if the ability to remove the clear plastic film at a later time is pivotal in your decision process then I suggest that you heed my warning. Removing the clear plastic film after it has fully cured is a much more aggressive process when compared any painters tape on the market

Thanks Shadowman for your input it is greatly appreciated. The film on the new car has been on and off a few times with no ill effect but as you mentioned it was not cured fully. I think since Bill brings this up I will state this is an unknown area and a do at your own risk. Personally I am more concerned about scratching the paint and the film is more durable for a driver car than just the paint. Since the film is rated for seven years in sunlight I do not think fade or yellowing would ever be an issue inside the car.

I am all for no scratches and am a fan of paint protection, BUT I have to say I agree with shadow that the paint protection applied to interior pieces is gonna turn into a nightmare down the road. We get cars in from time to time that have paint protection/clear bra installed and it is not a good install, etc. It is a complete nightmare to remove. The interior paint is inferior and I think is gonna peal very badly if you ever want to remove it. If this does not bother you, then proceed as I am sure the protection will help with some of the day to day scrapes that the interiors get. I had thought about this before, but decided against it personally. The door seals I may consider, but that is it......

I covered the sills only with film, as they see a lot of action. Be careful what you pick to cover.

Shadowman is right about the blue tape. When I was installing the belt bars behind the seats, I laid down some 3M blue tape on the back wall behind the seat on the silver paint for just 30 minutes. It peeled the paint off the panel, and the panels had to be replaced. :ack

interior protection

After reading the posts against the film, I think I will pass on the installation.

Thanks

John

I have applied the 3M protective film to the door sills of one of my cars and will have it applied to the other as soon as I can. It does appear a little more glossy but is not really noticeable. I've not had anyone comment or notice it. The protection it provides is well worth it. I don't believe the sills are painted so removal shouldn't be an issue in the future.

As far as the door sills are concerned, to me it comes down to one question... which had you rather have, a slightly glossy surface or scuffs and scratches?

What I have noticed is the Chrome sill plates take the most abuse ,especially on the passenger side (my kids ). I bought a couple of extras .I replaced them on each side .They come off quite easily .I did put on the Autobahn protective film on them and shall see how it works .Most importantly I have educated my kids about the in's and outs ,of proper car edicate !!
Any one else done this?
