Was at a car show at the weekend, spotted this hiding in the paddock.

Is this a kit car or an original GT40

Who can tell?????

Has anyone any idea please if this is an original GT40?

I am told it was an original MkIII, but I'm not so sure :confused

Yep just had it confirmed its a Kit.

But very good example guys, what do you think??

I like it!!! :banana

Most of these are kits, and quite flimsy (tons of play in rear camshell), Fiberglass over tube frame, with ok interiors, lexan windows.

Saw one at Laguna Seca by Superformance, and have brochures from CAV/GT40 and MD40.

The doors, camshell, and overall feel is very kit car. By comapirson saw 2 real ones in the padocks, and they seem much more tighter, solid and nice

Funny... when I found this spectacular forum (thx dbk) I also came across the forum that had the guys who owned the kit gt 40's. They were all complaining about the price of our originals and comparing ... comparing etc.... one guy was actually debating on getting one. So, I pm'd him and told him to spend the money and he'll see how worth it .... it really is. Than I told him to drive to all of his buddies homes with the kits and take them for a ride and/or even let them drive it. I promised him that the complaining on his forum about the GT's would stop along with the complaing of the price.... Never did hear back from that guy but would love to know if he bought one and is on this Forum..?????
I sure do like the look of the originals and would definately consider getting one in heritage just because like you guys said.... They look pretty freakin cool :thumbsup

It's not an original MKIII. All MKIIIs had roll up windows, this one doesn't. Also only 6 MKIIIs were built with 4 being right hand drive. I don't ever remember seeing that nose decal on any of the original cars although it could have been added later.

There were a few in the pits at Laguna Seca, one red one in particular being worked on. I saw several kits & wonder if the ones in the pits are the real deal... Bony?????

GT 40

I encourage anyone looking into these “recreations” to visit www.cav.co.za the home of Auto Futura. I have visited the factory and seen first hand the build quality. It is exceptional. They are meticulous to a fault and perfectionists. Nothing flimsy about any of it – least of all the clam shell. (By the way – bodies made as one piece and the doors cut out afterwards – for a perfect fit) I’m not talking about the “old” CAV guys – but the new owners. I was impressed enough to order one. VIN #123.

• Square headlights are correct
• Extended rear deck came on street versions
• Roll up windows??? Nope
• Street cars have hinged from front side windows, opened about 1 inch at rear
• Racing cars have sliding vent on side window
• There were 7 MK IV’s, 4 were left hand drive

I was at a car event last Saturday and the Ford GT40 Mark III owned by the Petersen Automotive Museum was there. From what the guy who works at the museum told me it was one of 7 made and one of 4 with left hand drive. Interesting looking with rounded headlights/front fenders and an extended tail/clamshell for added "trunk" space. Kind of a silver/blue color.

One of the Monterey car events? If so, do you have a picture? I'd like to see if any of my pix match up. :biggrin

ok they are mk 3's

This specialist said :

"First off, only one Gulf car has ever been registered for the road and it doesn’t go on the road nowadays so if you see a Gulf car on the road it is a replica. There are pics of the road registered car (1084) on my site. Second, shape of the body – front of the doors where they meet the front bodywork is wrong. Front indicators are also incorrect"

By the way, his site is

1966 FORD GT40 Mark I
This car is from the Collection of Gary Schroeder, the steering box guy from Burbank.
This photo was taken at the Petersen Automotive Museum. So was the text below.
Like other GT40s, this example embodies the many modifications developed by Carroll Shelby during his collaboration with Ford. Although early GT40s raced in the Prototype class, a total of 50 Mark I street cars were ultimately built to homologate them for production sports car racing. While a small number were sold as road cars, most were sold to private race teams. A genuine GT40, this car is painted to resemble one of the original Le Mans-winning Gulf team cars.
I don’t know if it is registered for the street, but it has been to cruise night in Northridge.
