I just installed the FRPP cat delete pipes. Stock Cats weigh

Left Right
Cats 14.12 15.10
FRPP 9.24 9.12
Saved 4.88 5.98

Total weight saved 10.78 lbs.

I haven't fired it up yet, because my Whipple is fully done yet. When I do I will give a report on the sound level differences.

Heat will be reduced in the engine compartment noticeably and the sound is great. I paired it with the Accufab x-pipe and I thought it would be too loud, but it is perfect since the cats are replaced with straight through mufflers/resonators. The backpressure drop is noticeable too. I only made 17.5 lbs boost with the 19# pulley with the Whipple, which I like because the power is still there!!!

BlackIce , are you referring to FORD GT REAR EXIT HEADERS part #
M-9430-GTX ? If so, can you (or other forum members) describe how easy/difficult it is to remove the stock parts and install the headers? And what you've done to deal with the sensors? Thanks in advance. I want to change my exhaust for a system that lets you hear the glorious engine, but I only want to do it once! No one around these parts has done much experimenting yet.

Loud Exhaust

Red Rocket -
there are a number of muffler delete Acufab/Heffner/Borla X pipe GT's around here.
And at least one that has the cat delete long tube FRRP exhaust. It is LOUD. The sound meter showed 138 db's! :eek

Hi Jeff, Hope you are well. :cheers I've been so busy expanding my business that I haven't been here for quite a while. So fellas forgive me if I'm not 'up' on the latest posts. I'm not lazy, I'm busy. The forum is such a great resource to be able to share in the experiences of others who have done these mods. There is a lot of expertise here.

re the exhaust - I keep getting two conflicting opinions on going with the FFRP with no rear muffler - some owners say its not too loud and then others that say it is. Of course, 'too loud' is a relative term, but 138 db's is Not! So I was interested in some sort of modifiable baffle system such as one GTF'er has designed. Are there any others manufacturing something similar? PM me if you like.

Edited - NO, I got the M-5230-GTX.

The install is not too bad, it just takes some time. Accufab's web site has instruction on how to get the stock muffer off. FRPP has good instructions as well. Note that none of them mention that you should disconnect the battery. I think Nota4re was the one to pointing out that the passenger cat is very close to the starter and can easily short out!

Although some have done this without taking off the clamshell, I think it is much easier to do so. 3 people are needed for the utmost safety, 2 to hold the cover, the 3rd to pull or insert the pins. I have seen the 2 GTguys do it without the 3rd person, but they are the best. Off is easy, I haven't put it back on yet and I think that will be a little harder because of my concern of dinging the paint. Off is a piece of cake. Tape it up first!

I haven't got is fired up yet, but will post sound meter reading when I do. I will have before and after db readings. Note the absolute number means little, since measurement distance and surroundings can make a huge difference, but look at the relative numbers. +3db is a doubling of energy, but to our ears, most would say it is only a little lounder, 10db sounds to most twice as loud.

cool. BTW Do you intend to 'track' it anytime? If so I'd like to know how to handle the db limits tracks often have.

Ice-
Did you go with fr or stainless works headers? Advise your decision making process please.
Cheers,
Daniel

I doubt if I can run Laguna Seca 92-93 db limit. Only the stock muffler would work there. I don't know about other tracks. I am signed up for Thunderhill Oct 5, I hope they don't have a sound limit.

My mistake I should have read the question more carefully. I got the FRPP cat delete pipes that go between the muffer and stock cast iron mainfolds, not headers. I didn't go the header route, since the install would be much more difficult and maybe too load for me. Also if the smog nazis were by the book they could make me take it off! One of my neighbors already mention to my wife, she heard me coming and though it was some young kid with a new hot rod and that was with only the Heffner cat back.

I believe they do - I tried emailing them but no answer yet. The site is here - http://www.thunderhill.com/html/contact_us.html

sound limit

T-hill has a sound limit but it is loosely enforced & fairly high. Black Ice - you'll be fine there.

Red Rocket - OEM headers + cats with Ida exhaust! Coolest GT sound around!

For anyone installing a FRPP cat delete pipe or headers for that matter. Verify that the exhaust pipe near the starter motor has a heat shield. The stock cats do and the Stillen's cat delete pipe does as well. The FRPP did not. I felt it would be better to have a heat shield so I fabricated one that connects to the transaxle heat shield with 3 sheet metal screws. Due to the tight fit the new heat shield must be installed after the transaxle one. A two piece affair.

Note I finally fired up the new Whipple with the FRPP pipes.

Sound levels measure 35 ft to the rear of the car was:

Stock with Heffner 86/98 db idle/4000 rpm
FRPP with Heffner 85/105 db idle/4000 rpm

I will retest the sound levels again maybe my wife did something different the 2nd time.

I tried to post some pictures of the heat shield but got this error. It seems the Forum's web server is having memory problems.

Error I recieved:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 15728640 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 3656 bytes) in /home/fordgt/public_html/forums/includes/class_image.php on line 1417

I'm afraid that with the FRPP full exhaust I may be banned for life from Thunderhill...I think I read somewhere the db is close to 130 at full throttle

T-hill sound

Cannibal - I don't think they really enforce the sound limit at Thunderhill. I've seen the db meter station but have never seen anyone man it. It has cobwebs & dust on it. I think it's for show for the county. There isn't a house for miles. Bring out that loud, nasty beast. It's time more spectators had to use earplugs! If it's too loud, you're too old!

When you are young, it isn't too loud because you don't know any better. When you are older and wiser it still isn't too loud, because your hearing is gone by then.

It isn't my fault. You better ask Bob Ida to buy you a hearing aid for Xmas. I also could have been all those years of motorcycle riding. My high frequency hearing is gone it makes it difficult to pick out conversations when other sounds are around.

I still can't hear Mrs. Bony....

now I am starting to understand

Bony - I knew you were smart but now I am starting to understand why I am told by so many that you are very wise!
