Ford GT - Transaxle Repair?

Jay Leno once demonstrated a method he uses for fabricating replacement parts. He uses a 3d scanner, and then 3d prints a NEGATIVE that can be used to cast an original.

3D scanning technology has probably advanced to where you can scan a part and get a CNC model for it... Is Billet Aluminum strong enough to make transmission parts? A high end machine shop could probably make it from the correct material.

Is this possible??? I'm sure there is a machinist among us. If it was I'd have thought someone would have done it but then again ...

google in AI mode "scan existing machine part to make new machined part". Hopefully it isn't hallucinating! :)

Personally, I have been through more GT transmissions on the race car probably than anyone on this forum. I can honestly tell you, just purchase a new one from Ford and you will be much happier and only have to do the job once. If you are interested in selling the "core" for more than Ford will give you, let me know I might be interested since i stockpile them at my shop. Most times when dealerships take them in, they sale them as well so if you core, let me know the dealership and I can reach out to them. Trust me on getting a new transmission, its the best route to go.

Mark thanks for the reply.

We ordered the Transaxle and Clutch. Surprised to see Ford overnighted the parts.

We are dropping the GT off today at a local shop for the transaxle swap. I trust the mechanic, and the shop greatly.

I would absolutely consider selling you the transaxle instead of returning to Ford. Make an reasonable offer.

Shipping I'd imagine would be a bit difficult, but not impossible of course. You must have more experience than I do with that.

As FYI to you and others, we used THIS shipping container to ship the customer's transaxle to the East Coast, back again, and then back to the East Coast. I was very impressed with the container and would recommend it. We did remove the shift lever (you need to hammer out a roll pin) but that was easy enough and then the GT transaxle fit like a glove. There is even a motorcycle-style tie-down strap that helps cinch down the transaxle. The shipper that you use will use a fork lift and/or pallet jack and that is what this box is made for.

@Intervention302 - if your trusted shop has any questions, please DM me for my cell phone and I'd be happy to answer any questions. We've done this a couple of dozen times and it has become pretty routine. One quick tip comes to mind and that is to create a couple of 4" "dowel pins" that can help you align the transaxle with the motor when you are sliding them back together. Our dowel pins were made by simply cutting the hex head off of a couple of bolts and then chamfering this cut end. We thread these into the motor and then the transaxle alignment and weight is assisted a lot as you mate it to the motor. Once they slide together, we un-thread the dowels and replace them with the OEM transaxle bolts.

You can't upload photos because because you are not listed as an owner.

Makes total sense, I'll work on correcting that.

Technically it's my Dad's, but it's going to be mine. He's 74 and not into the forum life.

He appreciated all of the information I relayed to him from you guys, so for that, I thank everyone.

Transaxle will go to Mark H in hopes it can serve a future race purpose.

Swap starts tomorrow

Was this through a local dealer or did you order through an online dealer like Tasca?

Did they ship directly to you? Was there an additional shipping charge?

Ordered from my local dealer, Autofair Ford. Also ordered the clutch a few days later.

Clutch was sent overnight and arrived same day as transmission.

There did not appear to be a secondary charge for shipping.

☝️ Thanks
