Gotta love the rocks in South Florida.

2 paint chips in the same week, at almost identical places on the car in 2 different cars at 2 different places , on the GT500 and the GTX1 AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!

The GT500 was some guy cutting the grass on the median spitting out a rock at the exact moment I was passing and the GTX1 was normal driving conditions.....

enjoy the fun!

Atleast your enjoying them.

Yes, it helps me maintain my sanity and these will not be garage queens so I have to get use to this stuff....

Battle scars...

I hit 2,500 miles pretty early (just bought in October 2006) but lately, I have become increasingly paranoid...And driving less.

I need to overcome my newfound fears...It's hard as it seems the longer you own a GT, the more special she becomes.

MK2 GT,
Do you have a clear bra on the GT, I was wondering if you did because I went with a speed bra to minamize the rock chips , I know they are a hassle but I will use it to drive it then remove it daily... Some say the clear bra will help with rock chips but don't know..Sorry to see the chip as your GT is awsome!!! Thats got to be the best color combo I have seen and the interior is 5 star........:thumbsup

I have no bra of any sort....I guess I am hard headed....

Of course the Clearbra will help with rock chips, that's what it's for. Who would pay $1000 or more for something that only kept bug juice off.

But that being said, it will only do so much. Particularly large or jagged rocks would naturally penetrate it or at least damage the film itself. At least it would be the film that was damaged and not your paint.

So far my car has over 3000 miles and the only rock chip on it is above where the film stops. I have no doubt that it would have plenty more if not for the film. Next time I'll extend the film further up the hood and fenders because it would have definitely stopped that small rock from penetrating....oh well, hindsight as they say.

You just hit the nail on the head, Texas. NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO OR HOW MUCH $$$$ YOU SPEND THERE WILL ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS BE A ROCK OR TWO that will find THE spot where there is no bra ...clear film, LSB, or otherwise. Look at what happened to MKII for Pete's sake. 'NAILED BY A LAWN MOWER from the SIDE.

There's no way to prevent these danged chips. Rocks will ALWAYS find the place with no protection (Murphy's law decrees so). Spending thousands to try to prevent it is just a waste of money. The only way you MIGHT - MIGHT - prevent chips is to leave the car in the garage. And even THAT'S no guarantee.

Sorry. That's just the plain truth.

You're totally right Sysco. I planned on driving mine as much as possible, and at 7,500 miles in 19 months I think I'm doing okay, but there is the continued creeping feeling of just wanting to stick it away.

How can I be more protective of a car I've had for 19 months than when I first got it? :eek

I guess most of you on this forum know the answer. :thumbsup

Sorry to see that, but it's going to happen. You just have to mentally prepare yourself for the fact that no matter how hard you try, you'll have flawed paint sooner rather than later. Whether it be rock chips or swirls or some substance...

At least you're in the car, having fun, using it for what it was designed for (and that's what's important)! :cheers

Try this product:

http://www.langka.com

I've used it on all my cars and produces a very effective repair. It's the 'Blob Eliminator' that you should get.

Thanks, Neilda. I'm going to get some of this stuff.

But, I think what this stuff is is a light "cutter" compound because I've used THOSE - and followed the same proceedure these folks outline (without knowing it) - and had exactly the same results. (Just "FYI".)

I did a small chip (that my GT came with) in that manner & I defy anybody - even the most anal on this Forum! - to find it.:lol

I would imagine chip repairs to "candy chrome" colors might be a weeeeee bit more difficult though ( in the final results dept.) even using this stuff.:shrug

Hi Empty - yes it does seem to be a light cutter, but there are obviously some additional properties that give it the edge. It does not seem to work on factory baked paint - so it's only effective on the paint that comes from touch-up pens.

I have found the best results by blobbing in the paint over a day or two, and then using Langka after about 2 days - it works just fine.

Pearlescent paint is, of course, very tricky. The Candy Chrome chip could be made less noticeable, but it's never going to be invisible. When I had 'Da Banana' (my daughters name for my yellow Murcielago) it was impossible to repair chips with any great success.....

Same here. Perhaps someone needs to come up with a full car condom to really protect the car... :biggrin

Good point, 'cause 'most any cutter WILL work on the baked stuff.

I'm gunna order some & try it. It sounds like the superior way to go.

"Tanks 'gain!"

The secret with this stuff is to have both courage and patience!

Courage because you'll want to make a big blob of paint on the chip - which is counterintuitive. Patience because the temptation is to immediately want to tidy the area - don't. Wait at least a day.

Try to do the repair in 'normal' or warm conditions, if it's cold or there is condensate in the air, the paint will not adhere quite so well. The danger of attacking the area with Langka too soon is that you'll drag out the paint you've previously applied into the chip - you won't do any damage, merely undo your previous work.

Good luck 007!

No pblm waiting a day around HERE! Should fixing another chip become necessary, it'll be DAYS before the weather is good enough to take the car out again anyway. And my garages are heated, so the application conditions will not be an issue either.
The BEST thing is: Murphy's Law specifically states, now that this stuff is on order, I'LL NEVER AGAIN HAVE CAUSE TO USE IT! :biggrin

... So, my mission - should I choose to accept it - is to attack & remove any offending chip with courage & patience. As usual, should I (or any member of my "I.M. Force") be killed or captured, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of my actions. (This post will self destruct in 5 seconds.):willy
