Sorry for not getting back with everyone sooner but with the holiday and such we have been finalizing everything for the pricing and structure for the number of units we feel we might have an interest in. We have received several inquiry's about the Double Din's and we appreciate everyone being patient. We have been working with Kip Ewing the one that started this unique design on the molds, drawings, engineering plans etc and feel we have a pretty good hold of the process from the pictures of the units attached and installed. Here is a little background on the Dins and hopefully it answers some of your questions that we have received.

The aluminum armature that gets installed in place of the stock radio structure is made out of 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum and is .250” (1/4”) thick. The side pieces are laser cut and the top bridge section is CNC machined to assure accuracy and strength. It is then assembled in a fixture designed to hold the aluminum pieces allowing for them to be welded to assure a repeatable and perfect fit on every unit. This portion is what keeps the structural integrity of the replacement double din unit that you install which will replace the stock cast piece. We are only offering two versions of the double din units for install. The first being the fiberglass version that is paint matched to the factory interior silver and the second version is 2x2 twill Carbon fiber one. Both of these pieces will use the same 6061-T6 armature the only difference will be the material used to make the housing itself. We will be offering the painted version for $2,650.00 and the carbon version for $3,000.00. We realize the pricing is a little bit more than when Kip used to produce them but with the limited run of units we will be doing as well as the cost incurred to obtain the plans/drawings/cad files/rights to sell the parts from Kip we have done the best job we can while allowing M2K to make a little off them.

Now we know many folks were interested in hearing the pricing etc so we wanted to get back with everyone on that as soon as possible but if you are still interested we ask that you please email either mark@m2kmotorsports.com or kevin@m2kmotorsports.com with your name, address and contact information and we will put a list together of those that are for sure wanting one and which version you are wanting and would be willing to give maybe some sort of deposit when we start the production run. We will contact you for the deposit once we get the full list of folks on board and go into production and at that time will be able to give some delivery dates as well.

If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact the shop at 281-346-8114 and ask for Kevin Kesterson or don't hesitate to email any questions as well.

Thanks,

I'm not sure of the strength requirements of the piece however doesn't welding 6061 lower strength of the material unless it is re-heat treated.

The answer to your question is yes, it does. 6061-T6 aluminum starts out at a ultimate tensile strength of roughly 43 KSI (kilopounds per square inch) and after welding ends up at roughly 37KSI which is defiantly a reduction in strength but equates to 37,000 pounds per square inch of ultimate tensile strength. We weld it with 4043 filler rod which has a high tensile strength as well and prevents cracking of the weld in the future . I am by no means a metallurgist but we do a lot of fabrication and try to stay current with the metals we use the most which 6061 is one of them. The ASM handbook volume 6 is a great reference that we often refer to when it comes to using metals for certain projects we do. And for sure if you use the wrong metal and or filler material when welding the results can defiantly be lackluster to say the least. I hope this answers your question. Thanks.

This is out of the ASM handbook volume6 welding, brazing and soldering:
6061-T6 welded using 4043 filler has as welded ultimate tensile strength of 37 ksi, yield is 20 ksi.

Didn't mean any disrespect for the answer. In all honesty, the piece being removed is not a structural part of the car per say but for sure a part of the dash. The funny thing is, the piece that is removed and replaced is bolted to a piece of plastic.... Lol. What we have done for sure is as strong or stronger than the piece being removed.

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions folks may have because the only way we can get a production run is to get enough folks wanting them...

Thanks

Yes, here are a few pics of the carbon fiber one installed in a car for reference.

Are you considering making any of the other Kip CF Pieces such as the console, door rings, buckets etc?

The pictures are very useful, thanks. But they seem to show a simple placard rather than a double DIN receiver.... Any of those? Any recommendation on units that will fit without further modification?

Many thanks!

I would be in for a set of AC vents if so.
