Clamshell weight?

Anyone know how much the rear clam weighs? I'm going to have to remove it to fix my cracked Borla muffler, and I'd like to have some idea of how many hands are needed to get it off!

You can do it with 2 people, easier with 3, number 1 remove the hinges and the other 2 hold the claimshell by the side

Don't literally remove the hinges. Instead, pull the pins out. A little squirt of WD40 will help them to slide out easier. We typically will have one person on each side holding the clamshell and a third person to pull the two pins. (Disconnect the two struts and the window defroster connector first. Don't forget to put a layer of two of blue painter's tape all along the edges). After the second pin has been pulled, there a little trick that will help you. The persons on each side should be holding the clamshell so that the front edge is about 12" open. Have the person that pulled the pins press down gently in the middle of the rearmost edge. Press down and forward. (To properly release from the hinges, you need to have this ~1.5" horizontal forward motion. The same applies to re-installing the clamshell. Two people holding it - about 12" open at the front edge. Third person stands behind the car, aligns the stripes with the clamshell about 1.5" too far forward and then it will come back into the hinges. The persons on each side can then pivot the clamshell open so the pins can be re-installed.

Why not just remove the muffler with the shell on....I removed the muffler (as many others here have) with the shell on.

I removed my Borla by myself (not recommended, however) with the clamshell on.

I installed one with the clamshell intact. But if you have 2 helper removing the clamshell isn't that hard and the muffler will come out easier.

Remember to remove the tips before trying to take out the muffler.

Having had the clam off twice for muffler replacements, I don't know why you wouldn't do it. Unless you can't find a couple of helpers. It comes off so easy, and once it's off, you have so much room to work. Less risk taking it off than trying to work under it. Seriously, this is a no-brainer.

I agree with Xcentric. Much easier with the shell off for sure. My wife and 15 year old son lifted mine off and set it down easily.

I guess it depends on having that third person to take the clamshell off. My muffler came out easy with my son on the drivers side - rotating and lifting, and me just supported the left side . We lifted it right up and out.
