Air Filter Elements

I just changed my GT air filter elements today. After about 12k miles they were very dirty. My other vehicles usually go 20-30k very easily. If you have some miles on your GT you may want to take a look as it is easily overlooked. I suppose that with a supercharger and the way the very efficient air inlet system is designed these elements can get dirty in a hurry. The dusty farming enviroment in my area does not help things either.

This was a good post because the air filter assembly is such that not only can it be forgotten about but as you stated; the design of the intake system is such that a dusty environment would create the need to change them frequently.

Did you replace them with OEM or ?????

I prefer the OEM style filters for many reasons.

I experience the same issue with the lotus. Both cars have air intakes behind the front wheels. The Gt's on top and the Lotus on the side. The lotus guys call it the "vacuum cleaner effect". Most cars pull air from the relatively clean airflow at the front of the car. Ours don't its just a function of where you are sucking the air from.

I change my filters with every oil change. It just keeps the dirty stuff out of the engine and its cheap insurance that will keep me enjoying my cars for years and years to come. I also buy them in bulk .... hey, being that way helped me get both of my dream cars! Now I just have to get my dream girl back where she's wanted. :thumbsup

I have a friend who owns a local NAPA store here. We compared the OEM and the Napa filters and found that they were identical in everyway. It looks to me that they are made by the same mfr. The Napa part number is 2572 and are about $13.00 apiece. I also try to stick to using OEM parts but I think these are the same part. NAPA does make the claim to meet or exceed factory specs. Bill, I would like to get your opinion if you get the chance to compare these parts. As far as the oil & oil filter, I will stick to the factory stuff.

THUMBS UP

These are fine

I was meaning to share OEM in style and that I am not a fan of the ?&N style filters aka the million mile filters that you can clean and re-oil. I reluctantly say much more because I know and respect the fact that supporting vendors sell them and that some folks find them an attractive item however.................

These as you shared from NAPA could very well find their way into my gal too.

Yes, I do agree with you on the reusable, washable type filters. A lot of us in the ag industry have learned the hard way and no longer use that type of filter. They will not filter out the fine particulates like the paper element filters do.

Every choice has tradeoffs. A clean lightly oiled K type air filter, may flow more air than a paper one, but at the cost of not filtering as well. Common tradeoff, less filtering, more flow. I will stick to OEM type air filters, with the small amount of miles I put in a set of filters every year or two won't break the bank. I have the K type on other cars without any problems, but then again the engines only has 60k miles on it. I didn't notice any change in performance either.

The GT Guys shared their opinion to stay away from the oiled filters because the oil will be sucked off of the filter and clog the sensor.
